For me it was 2 months before the doctor would let me return to work full time and lifted restrictions.

>:( I had a Spinal Chord Stim implant for my RSD. The Dr. and Rep. said that he'll make 3 incissions, 1 at top of cervical region,2 lower cervical region to pull leads away from spinal chord and finally left buttock for the stim. generator. They had to do a cervical laminectomy on out patient basis. Much to my demise I was kept over night with a cervical collar on and on and on for 2.5 months. I've had 7 ops on left shoulder and 1 on right. This was my 9th and by far the most painful xs3. This took place in 11/17/07 and today I have to have stellate ganglion blocks and cervical facets injections frequently. I'm on Fentanyl 100 mg/hr. and 4mg dilaudid for breakthrough pain, up yo 7 daily. Things are not looking good down the road. They have rated me @ 100% thru my pain mgmt. Dr. and 100% tru my ortho Dr. at the VA (they will not give it to me). The fight is on as well as Social Security Disability. I can't lift anything and are still in very much pain. If you have RSD or (CRPS) the same thing I would think real hard about the stimulator, even though the trial was a piece of cake and i got good results. Sometimes I want to give up. But being a Christian changes my mind. Lots of anxiety meds. not a whole lot of sleep with this.
Please excuse my spelling, but I've been up since 3am. very hard to get comfortable goes with this c**p. If you go on with it do your homework looking for Dr's :-(

My 14yr old son is due to have a posterior cervical laminectomy at the end of this month due to compression of the spinal cord at c4 c5 due to an exostose (bony growth) on c4. He currently has had severe pain in his head since September which continues to get worse, pain in his neck and legs and tingling numbness in his arm. We have no real choice about the surgery- it has to be done - but don't really know what of his pains, symptoms will disappear - surgeon not sure either and there is some permanent damage to the cord. He is currently on morphine, imipramine, diclofenac and paracetamol but the pain is still hardly bearable. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel?

patty1959 My name is Z. I have the same surgery in 2002,2003 and then Posteriorly in 2004. I know this is from 2007 and it is now January 2009. I have the same symtoms. The neck pain and the radiating arm pain going down to my fingers with some numbness at times. I was told back in 2002 that I would have permanent pain, and I do. Everyday 24/7. Some days the pain is worse than others. So, I've been in search for a reason why the pain seems to be getting worse. The Drs, did mri's and emg study. And then the Doctor come out and tells me everything looks fine, there are not damaged or irritation to the muscle or nerve. He then tells me that my pain is psychological and for me to get off the meds. I am not on any meds. I hate meds. But I do take ambiens once in a while to put me to sleep! My pain is real and it is not in my mind, it is in my neck and forearm 24/7. So if you are experiencing this pain after a few year prepare yourself for the long haul. I use a heating pad every nite to sooth the pain so I can try to sleep but at times I am awakened throughout the nite from the pain. I don't think my pain will ever go away so I just try to bare it as long as possilble and take an ambien when I just want to be pain free for a few hours. I am still searching for help from some new Drs.
hope your pain goes away!!

In Sept 2006 I had a cervical disc replacement at c5/c6 rather than a fusion or a laminectomy. I had few problems with pain after the surgery - the main issue was wearing a (soft) neck collar for a few weeks. However I was back in the gym after three months and now, two years later I can do most anything - except headstands in yoga. My surgery was carried out in Germany where there are experts at this type of surgery.

Hi, my husband is 51 yrs old, and did his laminectomy removed from C2 - C7 last Feb. He is alright with no pain except some numbness on both hands. The problem now is that, when we went for a 2nd-opinion post-operative consultant we got our shock. This is what happened:
Now the question of how successful the surgery was, we did not know the answer for sure. So few months after the surgery we flew to Singapore, and seek for a specialist second opinion. That doctor visit was a great shock, not only to him but to me who was presence during the consultant. I could not believe how that doctor was screaming and shouting that his surgery was all done totally WRONG, and that it will create a further damage to his spinal cord. The specialist told us that the main bone support of his neck has been unnecessary removed. He said, “…how could your neurone surgeon (who did that laminectomy surgery) removed all your C2 to C7 bones? It is simply not done in a medical term to remove the C2 bone. It was an irreversible mistake. A total disaster. That C2 bone is the main support for the neck, and by removing that, the main structural support of the neck has been destroyed. You should have never gone to him.” It was a shock that drove us to almost tears.
But, according to the 1st-doctor (who did the surgery), all was done correctly and accordingly to decompress his nerve. That removal of C2 to C7 did not destroy the neck support at all because the joins were not touch at all. FRANKLY, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND MUCH OF THIS MATTER AT ALL.
Now, this 2nd-doctor said that too many bones (C2 to C7) has been removed and it was a great disaster, an absolute mistake. C2 bone should NEVER be removed at all. With the removal of all those bones, he believed it has created a major instability to the neck.
Now, our question is: How true is what that 2nd-doctor said?
Please help us to answer the question. My husband is into a deep depression due to the 2nd-doctor's comment.

Hi ! I had the cervical laminectomy discectomy May 2008. I feel the surgery was a success. I do have loss of feeling in my fingers and I do have pain. I would rather have this pain rather than the pain I had prior to surgery. The time for me to heal was long due the severity of my injury.(work related from repetative use typing) :'( I believe each individual heals at thier own rate. I have a very high tolerance for pain so when I do say I have pain for me its at its most painful. I also believe if you go too fast in your healing you will have problems in the years down the road. The most important thing with the surgery and healing is that you have the best doctors. I was lucky, I work in a hospital and knew from the nurses, co-workers and patients who I would choose. Do your research!!! I hope for the best surgical result and recovery for your husband.
Do let him know he sould do absolutely nothing for the first 3weeks.......... It had helped me have a better recovery. My husband and children were a blessing to have assisting me after the surgery. It does get better.

I had a posterior laminectony c3 thru c6 six months ago. I was given Percoset for pain medication and Flexeril as a muscle relaxant for physical therapy. My stay in the hospital was overnight. My incision healed well in about a week.
My experience in the month following the operation was part relief and part pain and hopelessness. Relief from many of the symptoms such as loss of balance while walking, falling, feeling out of control while walking or hiking. I have had partial relief from shaking hands, sloppy hands, vertigo, runny nose, and stiffness in my neck. I would consider the operation successful just from the relief of falling while walking or hiking and getting my motor skills partially restored in my hands.
I had many, many side effects from the Flexeril that imitated the recovery symptoms. This was very discouraging because this condition was not diagnosed until after a month of feeling hopeless, and that the operation hurt me more than helped me. In fact when I complained of my symptoms the surgeons advice was these are all normal and I should take more Flexeril which only made me sicker. I didn't feel well enough to get our of bed for about a month.
Finally I googled my symptoms and checked the side effects of Flexeril and immediated connected it to my problems. I discontinued the use of it and within 24 hours my symptoms were greatly relieved.
Six months following my surgery I am still experiencing some neck stiffness, muscle soreness, pain when the muscles that were cut during the operation are stretched and tiredness from holding my head upright. I am glad that I had the operation, but would not in any sense consider it to be painless and without negatives, nor underestimate the recovery period. I feel that over time and as the nerves heal that I will get even more benefit from the surgery.

I had posterior c2-c7 laminectomy with several screws placed, sx was 9-11-09. Was in hospital one week then to rehab facility for 2 weeks then home, have had PT and OT and nurse twice a week for 2 weeks. Need to wear hard collar for 12 weeks...then apparently a soft collar for unknown time. Saw doc last week, had xrays and he said I was healing fine and return in 4 weeks. I also have numbness in left thumb and first 2 fingers, left arm weaker than left. My biggest concern is that my legs still feel weak and am afraid to walk without walker. Has anyone had leg weakness and pain in feet that has gotten better with time? Therapists tellme that I need to rest and not worry as everything will get better in time and doc said it can take up to one year for the nerves to regenerate themselves. So I hope down the road we will all be doing better than right now, I know my sx was done as emergency as I had lost control of left leg.

My father had surgery two days ago. Yesterday we visited him and he was doing okay. Today was much worse. His face and neck swelled up, he wouldn't eat and had too much pain to even sit up. Yesterday he was sitting up and wanted to try to take a walk. They gave him something for muscle spasms in the neck. Is the swelling normal? They gave him some Vicatin this afternoon. His symptoms were pain in the hands at night--getting up 4-5 times a night. Numbness in the feet and hands. He has arthritis and has had past heart problems. Because he was dizzy and lightheaded today and there was an irregular beat on the heart monitor a few times they also did a stress test on him. Not on a treadmill, they inject something to stress the heart. We will hopefully get the results back soon. Not a good day.

Hi there Ive had multi level laminectomy as well from C4 to C7 23rd Dec, it was in the urgent catergory given the date, I`m 48. I had pain down both arms down to my hands ( my arms can still feel heavy) spasms too & shoulder blade pain. The Pain that most patients are describing has a name Neuropathic pain its very real and associated with spinal or brain conditions. There is a medication under perscription called Lyrica its used for shingles but it worked wonders for me. I have alergies so alot of strong medications wont help me . This one didn`t give me adverse effects with any other medications. I t is gentle on the system and enabled me with recovery, I took it as I needed it with anti inflamitory medication. It allowed me to use my arms and rest and relaxed my muscles so I could move a little freer. Iam not out on a `sales promo`I am a geniun person who has also been down this road. I was very unsteady on my legs and need a walking cane for balance, now I only use the cane for an hour after hydrotherapy. I get annoyed with myself and I am totally sick of being still in recovery. Medical staff keep telling me that Ive had major surgery and to slow down. Ive been told it will take any where between 3 months to 18 months before patients can feel back to normal, this is due to recovering nerve damage. It depends on the individual and the extent of the opperation, I`m of the opinion that time will heal. to see me after the operation I could have been perceived as being cerebal palsy with pain as intense as if I had concrete between my shoulders I had to use a rolleraide for mobility in hospital, to see me now you would never believe it. I hope my input may help as it has helped me , my doctor couldn`t understand why I was having arm pain so this has been reasurring even though i knew what was causing it!

This summer I had a C3-C6 laminectomy to remove an intradural tumor. I had massive swelling in my face and neck for over a week. Some days I looked better and others worse. Just think about trauma the body goes through, it defintely does not like being messed around with near or on the spine. So I would not worry too much about it. Everyone is different but a lot of it has to do with how long the surgery was. Mine was over 8 hours and I was on my face, pointing downhill the whole time. So you can imagine all of the fluids that rush down to the face and neck area.
Hope your father does well!

I am being told I need posterior cervical laminectomy because of a narrowing between C3 - C6 and evidence of briusing in the middle of this area. My only symptoms are tingling in my right thumb and forefinger and a sense of heat on the right side of my body . This heat is worsr depending on where or how I am moving. Lifting my right arm toward the ceiling while sitting in a chair and leaning back produces a burning sensation on my right side from my ankle to the tips of my fingers. It gets nearly unbearable if I purposely hold that position. 30 seconds seems to be my limit. Did any one else have these heat periods before the surgery and did the surgery correct it?

I had a cervical laminectomy 4 weeks ago and still cannot walk without a frame. I was almost completely paralysed fron the neck down before the Op` so even this is an improvement.. I guess I must be one of the worst cases. Maybe there are other issues lower down but I`ve been told that anything from 6 - 18 months will be required before my strength and balance will return to normal. It`s all a case of how bad it was. Mine progressed quickly and caused me to be bed ridden. the pain afterwards was horrendous... I couldn`t even reach out for a cup of tea for a week; Then an infection took over. Still on Morphine. But hopefull.
