Wouldn't ibuprofen be worse for bruising because it thins out blood? Actually it's not recommended for bruising because it just makes it worse. Take acetaminophen for the pain or go visit your doctor to get stronger pain killers.

The ripping feeling sounds like it could be aortic dissection, which may need some help from medical professionals, although I know little, just read about this, as my heart area is also soar still, 5 weeks after hitting the steering wheel. So I need to return to the doctor. My initial visit showed no broken ribs on xrays.

I too slammed my chest into the steering wheel and stilll have heart pain (or the heart area anyway) 3 months later. Initial xrays were negative, but I wonder if there is lung or heart damage or broken rib they missed? It is better than two months ago, but concerns me. Ideas?

I was just in an accident on 01/15/15 and they did a CT scan as well as chest x-ray and told me they found slight hemmoriging but didn't tell me where inside I had minor bleeding. The steering well air bag hit me right in the chest and sort of in my upper stomach. I have now been experiencing horrible chest pain on my left side that only occurs if I sneeze, cough too hard, or breathe too hard. Anything that kind of just takes a bit of breathe away I suppose. I was looking to try to get some answers but I guess no luck! I have had to go back to my doctor for stronger pain medicine for my back and chest but she gave me nothing but ibuprofen and told me to just rest. :/ Stupid. They sent me home after all that and it hurts so bad. I am in the process of hiring a personal injury lawyer to take on my case to get me the compensation for any and all treatment that I may need in the near future because I can't take this pain :(

1. It is good idea to see a doctor to do an X-ray at least, to make sure you don’t have anything serious.
2. You can ask to see X-rays yourself and you don’t have to be an expert to see broken bones. I could clearly see internal bruises and lung issue (was hard to see the lung on one side at all)
3. Broken or fractured ribs are painful, but don’t have any direct threats to your health. You need to watch for damage to internal organs, such as lungs and internal bleedings.
4. Some internal bleeding is OK as long as it would not start bleeding too much, something you want to check for regularly with X-ray or at least oxygen measurement.
5. If you have hard time to access doctor, you might want to monitor blood pressure, temperature, oxygen level. Oxygen level will show if you have issues with lungsinternal bleeding and etc. (Oxygen level is lower when you are sleeping).
6. Get vaccination if possible against pneumonia.
7. You need to exercise your lungs. If breathing is hard, take pain medicine. You can use pillow to push against ribs, it might help with pain. Buy Voldyne 5000 spirometer if you are able (around $5-$20 online) and try to use it as often as pain permits (10 times every hour) .
8. Don’t overdo exercise also. You might feel one day better and you start making activities that will hurt you next day.
9. Healing in average would take 4-6 weeks, but might be longer depending on your activities and location of damage and you might go through more and less painful periods.
I am not a doctor, this is just my personal observation from a few different accidents. I wish everyone well and hope your pain will be gone soon.

I was in a car accident about 11 days ago and probably five or so days into healing afterward, my ribs and chest started to feel worse. I was googling this for fear that my heart might collapse and kill me or something, but it sounds like this happens to a lot of people, so I'm not so worried anymore. We were hit by a truck on the highway, so the crash was pretty rough and I remember my chest and stomach hurt pretty bad initially too - especially my stomach, where the lap belt was. That pain went away by the time I was in the ambulance, and then of course I felt awful the next few days, but within three or so days, I felt mostly fine as long as I didn't bend over too far or have to sit up after laying down. But then of course, this chest and rib pain showed up, and now I can't sleep on either of my sides - I have to sleep on my back, which is annoying... and bending and moving around much causes pain too... I had all the x-rays, so nothing is broken. I guess it's just bruising, but it's internal because you can't see many bruises on my skin. Anyway, I think I'll be okay, so at least there's that... I hope it goes away soon though... This is annoying.
