Hello joesky,

Sounds like you have a bit of a dilema.  You need to go but you essentially have an open wound to some extent in the wrong place.  It may be a bit late at this time but you could try eating soft foods and soup/broth until you have some time to heal more.  Seems to me your doctor should have talked to you about this.  Really, the only thing I can think of is things like cheese and perhaps soft white bread, chicken noodle soup, avocados, bananas and the like.  Maybe even baby food for a while.  You certainly don't want to get that area infected so keep that in mind.  I wish the best of luck to you and you're just going to have to be patient.

I hope you are feeling better by now. I had the surgery on 12/20. Miralax daily after my first meal is keeping the stool soft and regular. You have to drink tons of water and get as much fiber into your diet as possible. The more you exercise the quicker your bowels will move. It sounds to me like you are having a difficult time relaxing the muscles enough to "go". I needed a muscle relaxer to relax enough to allow the stool to pass. Sitz baths (10min soaks 4 times a day) also help to relax the area enough to allow stool to pass. If all else fails, contact your doc.

Also, giving a little push is entirely different than straining, and I hear it is normal.
