I want to share my experience and advice thus far after hemorrhoidectomy surgery. I had three external hemorrhoids removed 6 days ago. They did not bother me but for the fact that I didn't like how they looked. I cannot say yet whether it is worth it or not as I have a long way to go before I'm healed. I can say that it is definitely very difficult the first week. I've read horror stories and as much as I have felt this is the worst thing I've ever gone thru, I don't think my experience was as difficult as so many others. I began changing my lifestyle before the surgery by becoming much more health conscious. I'm a vegetarian and I hired a trainer and dropped some weight. I was very overweight which I'm sure is what led me to have hemorrhoids in the first place. I cannot stress enough how lifestyle change is a must. Being active, strong, eating fiber rich organic foods, doing yoga, meditation. It's changed my life. Okay now my experience....then my advice. Day one....felt pretty good all day. Was still numb from general anesthesia. Took Advil, citrucel, stool softeners and drank prune juice. Also took the oxycodone to sleep because began getting a little uncomfortable at night. Slept okay. Day two...felt a little more pain. Took it easy for the most part but did some light vacuuming and washed dishes and did a load of laundry. Rested. Took Advil and two doses of oxycodone. Took my citrucel, stool softeners and drank prune juice. Ate oatmeal w blueberries, drank a green smoothie, had homemade minestrone soup, applesauce. Slept okay. No BM yet. Day three...woke up feeling like I had to have a BM. Went to the bathroom and couldn't go. Felt my stool at the edge of my rectum but it would not come out. Spent all day in and out of bathroom trying to push slightly but it would not come out. It was painful and maddening. Called my doctor and she said take miralax. Took miralax in afternoon. Waited. Waited. In the meantime I know this is gross but kept putting coconut oil on my gloved finger and tried to lube the outside and gently pushed my finger inside to loosen my stool ever so slightly. This was not recommend but I was driven to madness. Also was trying to do sitz baths with and without Epsom salt. I was exhausted from the effort and anxiety. Finally around 10 pm it came out. It hurt. I didn't pass out. I had to push a little. Felt like I probably had new hemorrhoids. Was sore, raw, swollen and my sphincter felt loose and not in a good way. I stopped pain killers because was terrified of being constipated. Went to bed and slept not so great but got some rest. Woke up day 4 and thought I'd feel better having finally went to bathroom but felt the same pressure of hard stool at my rectum. Tried a few times to go. Sitz baths on potty because filling tub each time with no success was exhausting. Easier to do the pan. Took more miralax, citrucel, stool softeners, Advil. Finally a little while later I went. It was more painful than first one but still managed. The real issue was I then proceeded to go about 15 times after. Only the first two were worth talking about. I'd say about half a cup of stool each. Then the other 13 times I went were maybe a teaspoon amount with blood. Every time I had to pee I pooped. I was in so much pain, my rectum felt like it was never done pooping. I was sweating and exhausted from going in and it and at this point I was jumping in shower now to clean because I could not wipe with witch hazel wipes even. That brought slight relief. It seemed to calm down towards evening and I was able to relax a little. That was my hardest day. I got little sleep that night. Woke up day 5 praying it was better than day 4. I stopped miralax and citrucel and just took stool softener. Still taking Advil. Ate kind of same sort of diet. Drank about a gallon of water everyday. I began a similar day to day 4 with constant pooping and showering but instead of going 15 times between 6am-1pm I went 8-10. So it was a little improvement. Also called my doctor to ask her advice because my bottom was raw and wanted to know if it was normal. She said it was and to stop the miralax, citrucel and softeners. Just eat fiber foods and drink water. Now this is where I'm thinking I took a turn. I felt good all day and began icing. I also feel that all the medicines and laxatives and stuff had caught up with me those two days and was working itself out. I was determined to regulate my bowel naturally. I hate meds. I knew they were necessary but hate them. They fix one thing and cause two other things. So I took no stool softeners day 5. I took a product called natural calm at night. It is magnesium supplement and helps with calming and also is a gentle natural laxative. Nothing like miralax. It just gently helps regulate you. I drank all my water. Ate well. Also took a shot of apple cider vinegar. Also very healthy for you. I slept decently. The ice helped a lot with swelling. Wish I started sooner. Also want to say that even though I wasn't doing sitz baths every time I showered off to get clean I held the shower head on gentle setting on my rectum for a while. Today is day 6. I woke up and felt like I had to go a little. But took my dog for a walk around our property for a few minutes til I felt more urgent. Then prepared for the morning ritual. Was a little worried because I stopped softeners and fiber pills. But I knew I'd been eating well and drinking the water oh and I was also taking a probiotic. Forgot to mention I began that on day 4. So it's still morning but I had a good BM. It was soft but less watery and diarrhea like. It came out all in one shot so far. About a cups worth. I also didn't sit all the way on toilet. I read squatting helps to let it come out naturally. Seemed to work. So far so good. I'm icing now and ready to make some oatmeal. I will update as I go further in my journey. The BM still hurt but a little less. There is still blood when I poop but not too much after (very little leakage). The big thing is that feeling of still not being done and throb like I have to go again immediately has subsided tremendously. Still feel it a little. I'm doing gentle kegels too. My advice is simple, try to change your lifestyle before doing this surgery. Prepare for the worst. Use the meds you need to but try to ween off them as soon as you possibly can and try natural remedies instead. I think my green smoothies are helping as they are filled w kale, pineapple, mango, banana, chia seeds, hemp oil and turmeric. I've eaten mini wheats and oatmeal w blueberries. Minestrone soup. Applesauce. Apples. Full fat yogurt. Sweet potato. I had hummus on Ezekiel toast w spinach, cucumber and carrot. I'm eating but small amounts and I space it out. Drink drink drink water. I drink alkaline water because the ph is higher and it filtered. But that's another conversation. I'm only mentioning this because I don't see many posts of people who eat very healthy or believe in healing naturally. I truly believe all the laxatives and c**p mess you up. I will check-in in a few days and let you know how it's still going. I'm hoping I've turned a corner today. I know I'll have set backs and still have a ways to go but feeling positive. This experience can be very depressing. You feel hopeless and have anxiety. And I'm a stable person but this shook me. Learned a lot about myself. I can say one thing....I will continue on my path to good health. Sickness, illness is not anything I plan to live with. I'm on no medications and don't ever want to be. Good luck and God bless

Thanks for your post. I am scheduled next month for surgery. Having the left column removed, internal and external hemorrhoids so will have stitches from inside to outside. I am thankful though that I am only having the one area operated on and not all 3 columns. Scared to death of the pain and having leakage afterwards. I plan on following your advice with regards to limiting laxatives and eating right. I hope to not have to take the pain meds for more than a day or two and will try to switch to ibuprofren.

If I had to do over I might take the laxative on day two. That pain on day three of the hard stool was torture. You want to avoid constipation. The pain meds will do that to you. Also anesthesia. I also did a fleet enema the morning of procedure and a ducolax laxative the day before so I was cleaned out and probably dehydrated from not eating or drinking from that midnight before surgery. You live and learn. The constant going is also very difficult but lesser of the evils. Just make sure you don't wipe much. Light shower spray w warm water to clean and soak if you can. I started turning on shower before I sat on toilet. Then I just went right in. Then soak if you can. Then ice. I just went three more times and hope I'm done now. It's still painful and annoying and uncomfortable and exhausting but the frequency has decreased from 15 times day for and 10 times yesterday. Hope today it's just 5. Crossing my fingers.

I'm now beginning day 10 and I left off on day 6 so I wanted to update my experience. The spasms following my morning BM's lasted for hours after on day 6,7 and even 8. The late afternoons and evening weren't too bad. Almost felt myself even. I've slowly been eating more solid foods. I've been on no pain killers or even Advil for the last few days. I've been taking vitamin C, a multivitamin and arnica tablets for pain and healing and a probiotic at night. The swelling has reduced dramatically. I've been keeping very clean with showers. My BM's are healthy and soft. They don't hurt passing them but after I suffer a bit w the muscle spasms. Day 9 was not bad. Had my morning BM and a tiny one about an hour later and that was it. That's is so good compared to my multiple ones a day from day 4-8. Day 9 I felt great in the afternoon so I cleaned my house and did laundry including my bedding. I cooked some roasted veggies for the next few days (broccoli, sweet potato and spaghetti squash) and was active all day. Now today is day 10 and its early yet but I had my morning BM with a little blood and some discomfort after but the shower and gentle stream of water relieved that. All in all it wasn't bad compared to what I've been going thru day 4-9. I'm hopeful today. I may venture out for a walk this afternoon if I feel good still. So I think day 10 is the day you can finally turn a corner to feeling better. I'm gonna just post examples of things I eat because I don't think I'm the norm when it comes to the diet everyone recommends. First few days I had oatmeal, yogurt, veggie soups, applesauce, apples, green smoothies (spinach, banana, pineapple, mango, flax seed oil, turmeric and chia seeds). I've slowly added sandwiches of hummus on Ezekiel bread w cucumber, carrot, alfalfa sprouts and spinach and last night I had my roasted sweet potato, roasted broccoli and since I'm a vegetarian I had 3 chickless tenders. I believe nutrition during this experience is so important to your healing. I'm not into processed foods so I wouldn't eat jello or some of the other recommendations. I read having the BM's are helpful to healing too because they prevent narrowing of the rectum. So mine haven't been too narrow. They stay soft because I drink lots of water and I'm eating fruit and veggies. So I just wanted to update on my experience as I've said. I'll check back in to update on my 2-3 week mark.

This post was not supposed to be "guest" as I'm the one who began this particular post. Hope that doesn't confuse people. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Just a heads up that this was supposed to be a follow up to original post. Sorry.

I am echoing everything said in this above post by Inthesalonbiz. I am experiencing everything the same. Now on Day 16 post op, I am going a few times a day with loose stool (helped by Miralax and others). Life is manageable and hopeful even now. But yes, I would be on a laxative early on.
