Thx for the info about losing weight once you are off Coumadin...I have been on it for 3 months and gained weight, all in my midsection. I workout daily, getting really depressed with the weight gain. I was diagnosed with a DVT 3 months ago...go to the doctors tomorrow, am hoping to hear that I can get off of the Coumadin...I was wondering how long it would take before you see a difference in your weight once you are off...thanks!

I started on Coumadin then switched to Xarelto after approx 4 months in treatment of a massive PE. I have gained over 20lbs in approximately a year, most of it harboring in my stomach area. My PCP, insists as yours, there is no correlation to the gain ( I am a Marathon runner so at first I attributed gains due to breaking from the exercise due to PE's) I have now been off Xarelto less than a week and I already notice a difference in my abdomen. You know your body.

I agree about the weight gain. I have been in Warfarin for over two years now and have gained 20 lbs even though my diet, besides avoiding vitamin k, hasn't changed and I still spend hours a week working out. I've had my thyroid checked along with my cortisol levels and those are all normal. I thought I was going crazy because all the doctors have told me it must be my calorie intake and lack of exercise. I was diagnosed with primary antiphospholipid syndrome in 2012 after suffering bilateral pulmonary emboli. I'm glad I'm not the only one out there having the same problems.

It still blows my mind that the doctors do not see the connection. When my doctor allowed me to discontinue the Warfarin, I gave him printed out pages of this site. He said he had not ever heard of it.
I have been off the meds now since mid June 2013. I am happy to report I'm back to my ole' self. However, rebuilding all the muscle strength has been tough; but well on my way.
Keep talking people. There is a connection.
I'm sorry, but "rat poison" is poison, it has to affect other organs.

I have been on Warfarin for almost 4 years following an Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery. Unfortunately, I don't have the option of going off the medication and will be on it throughout the rest of my life. I too have gained 10-15 lbs. which won't be come off even though I watch my caloric intake, exercise, and even was on Weight Watcher's Diet and very compliant. The weight distribution has also been mainly in my mid section. The weight gain and inability to lose the weight is frustrating. It is reassuring to read all the blogs and realize that the weight gain problem is not something I have imagined!!

They DO see the connection, of that I'm certain. They are aware that this drug or its like is the only thing to stop blood clots killing people. They do not want people to be scared of the drug because of weight gain. To deny that weight gain occurs is the lesser of the two evils for them. They stay silent or simply deny in order to ensure people continue to protect themselves against recurring clot/s.
In this case, it is not done for monetary gain, but for patient welfare. I came off Warfarin after six months (for multiple lung PE's),-because there was no hereditary factor. A long haul flight 3 months ago? Despite all precautions---blood clot left lung = Warfarin for life. Not happy, because I know I am gaining weight again. There is currently no other medical choice so Doctors are denying weight gain. As someone else here has said: you know your own body. This medication DOES cause weight gain (in most but not all who take it),-it also cause fatigue in many of us. Good luck all!

I know every health care provider will not believe us about weight gain while on Coumadin but as a long term Coumadin user, I can tell u that is one of the side effect. I've been gaining 10 pounds the past year and half

Since beginning warfarin I have gained over 2st in less than a year and no matter how more active im getting im still gaining around 1/2lb per week. I'm also taking lanzoprozole which could be contributing. I'm gonna speak to the dr this week but I bet they'll just tell me to keep a food diary, which I already do

@jmwalls, I'm on 7.5 mm coumadin/warfarin for 3 yrs, have gained 28 lbs, and I exercise, have stopped eating wheat products, started eating a lot more fresh & vegies, and stopped having a glass of wine with my meals. In spite of this, it continues to climb.

I have been on Warfarin for 3.5 years. Almost immediately I experienced weight gain. After a Heart valve replacement I received Heparin Injections and warfarin for 5 days to keep from clotting. While in the hospital I gained 10-15 pounds, enough to keep me an extra day in case I had internal bleeding. I have gained 50+ since being on warfarin. Warfarin interferes with and is interfered with by hormones. Not a good combo. Testosterone decreases warfarin effects and warfarin defeats testosterone. As an aging man (58) I have experienced many symptoms which could be either aging or warfarin. But too many started after warfarin therapy began. Now my weight gain is causing other problems, such as knee pain, difficulty completing simple tasks due to fatigue, etc. Since warfarin does cause changes in red blood cell production, platelets, and defeats Vitamin K by slowly shutting down liver functions, how can anyone say it will not cause any systemic reactions or end up not killing us slowly.

I have been on warfarin for 3months one and have gained 11 lbs. they tell me the same thing that it doesn't cause weight gain. I disagree also

I went on Warfarin after a suspected PE last November. I just came off the drug this past month, but in that span of time I have bloated up and gained almost 40 pounds. I have not changed ANYTHING as far as my diet, and even been more physical.
