I have noticed that since I am on Warfarin (3 months now) I have put on over 7 pounds. I am hungry all the time. I am active and use the treadmill every day, slowly, and keep busy since I retired 22 years ago. It is making me wonder if it is the warfarin?? I was pleased to see someone else was also concerned. If anyone since a year ago has had the same problem please let me know?

I have been on Coumadin (Warfarin) since November 2013 for a PE and gained 15 pounds and am fighting everyday to avoid more weight gain.  I was just told this morning I can stop taking coudmadin so I'm anxious to see if any weight will come off.  I'll report back soon!

Been on Xerelto for a DVT since November 2013 and have gained that mystery weight everyone is talking about. Went from size 10 clothes to a 14 in 6 months. I think it's just blood thinning meds in general- not just Coumadin

I have been on warfarin twice.  Got my first DVT in 2003 in leg (charlie horse that wouldn't go away), I was 33 yrs old at the time.  Diagnosed with Protein C deficiency and was supposed to be on warfarin for 6 months but I choose to be on it for 2 years.  Was not active and had a desk job (programmer).  I didn’t gain any weight.  Got another DVT in the same leg Oct 2013 at the age of 44 yrs old and will be on warfarin for life. This time I have steadily gained weight from 190 to 220 as of present.  I maintained weight of 180-190 until the last DVT.  Of course checked with doctor and tested thyroid and they said no it wasn’t the medication.  Still have the desk job of a programmer and not active.   My eating has been sporadic over the years.  I starved myself over the last four weeks by averaging 1000 calories daily and actually gained.

So I had to buy new (larger) pants last night and from today forward am going to focus on the weight.  Yes, it went all to my stomach, got the belly just like everyone else.   I am going to track my weight daily (two readings: morning and night), track what I eat and diet by eating more fiber, lots of veggies, WATCH STUFF WITH SODIUM to avoid water retention!!! Especially eating out and processed foods.  Start looking at the labels and our foods are loaded with Salt and Sugars.  Also, I will make an effort to get more exercise but feel fatigued after work so not sure about that one but going to try.  My energy level has been the same for the past 10 yrs and was the same on and off.  Foods, stress, sleep and physical fitness plays the biggest part in that.  As far as exercise, what I can advise others is to start slowly and build upon it from how you feel but don’t feel like you are fragile and doing any activity is a risk; quite the opposite.  NOT MOVING AROUND is bad, very bad for anyone at any age.  Get active doing something to reduce the risks.

Do you get off blood thinners after being on them for a blood clot?  Well, my brother did and he ended up in the hospital with blood clots in his lungs, around his large intestines and a massive one under his liver and is a mess not to mention stuck with a $45,000 bill.  After being tested several times, he didn’t test positive for Protein C deficiency and it is hereditary?!?!  But some of my relatives have it and some don’t.  Some have been on blood thinners for life and find it harder to keep weight off…as the older they get.  There is a risk with anything, a blood clot can kill quickly or cause long term damage if you live through it.

Do I think by weight gain is part of being on warfarin?  Yes but it’s also contributed to my age, my diet, my physical fitness and part genetics.  The majority of us will undergo changes in our lives.  Face it, your metabolism will slow down as each year goes by.  Do some more research on warfarin/weight-gain and the numbers are that a small percentage experience the same weight-gain but we all know it the blood thinners.  We are the small percentage and it is the same for us all.  The other medications are new, not fully tested, with serious side effects and very expensive.  Warfarin has been around for several, several years.

My opinion is that I am going to have to make adjustments in my lifestyle concerning diet and exercise while being on warfarin.  My plan is to start tracking weight, diet (foods) and exercise on a daily basis and experiment with each to find what works for me.  I will keep you folks posted on my findings.

Note: for those new to warfarin; educate yourself on what foods, medications, vitamins and supplements effect your INR (especially vitamins and supplements).  Some of that stuff lowered my INR rapidly.

I have been off the Coumadin now for 1 year. I am happy to report that I am back to "NORMAL". It did take however almost 7 months to be rid of the bloating and weight gain. I'm disappointed to hear that the Xerelto does the very same thing. My greatest fear is that I'd have to go back on blood thinners for life, should I ever have another blood clot. I was hoping to hear that the Xerelto would NOT cause weight gain. I hear it all the time, that it could be worse, that I'm still here...
I just wish that there was a better way of treating blood clots without compromising the rest of all other vital organs, which,
I'm sure has to eventually affect over all health.

My 18 year old son has been on Xarelto for 7 weeks and has gained weight specifically around his stomach. He is hungrier than I have ever seen him. He eats healthy and works out every day.
