I've been taking Coumadin since my open heart surgery. Around 5 months ago. I've gained 10 pounds. Now I'm able to workout more n eat healthy. But my weight won't come down at all.Doctor says Coumadin doesn't cause weight again but I believe it does.

Thank you. Be safe! I was sent a pamphlet from the makers of the aortic valve used to replace my congenitally defected one. On-X. There was great news, it said my Inr should go down to 1.5-2.0. However, the Doc isn't listening! He insists on continuing with the old standards of 2.5-3.5. I fight the weight and still bob up n down like an apple in the water. And I am so tired. Brea

Hi all-I have experienced the weight gain from Coumadin as well—probably 10-15 lbs since starting it the beginning of March. It's similar to the weight I gained when I drank diet Pepsi—the same puffy feeling and the feeling that no matter what I do I can't lose the weight. After I stopped drinking the diet soda three years ago, I lost 35 pounds. My theory is that my body didn't like something in the diet Pepsi and reacted like it was poison—probably the artificial sweetener. Since warfarin is used to kill rats, it makes sense that my body would see it as poison is well. An article I read regarding diet Pepsi which I think applies to my experience with Coumadin says that when our bodies are in a constant state of stress and inflammation they mistakingly think it's a fight-or-flight situation and the body releases cortisol which makes it nearly impossible to lose weight can actually cause us to gain weight. However, I can't get off of the Coumadin because the risk is worse than the benefit. At this point, I'm going to try some different cleanses and cut out all sugar since there's not a whole lot of other things I can cut out. One thing that is always stuck with me regarding weight loss is the saying, "you lose weight and kitchen and get fit in the gym "

I've been on Warfarin since January 2014 due to being diagnosed DVT which led to PE. This year Ive noticed that I've gained 20 pounds and went up an extra dress size. My eating habits haven't changed and I eat the same as the same on a healthier scale. My mom thinks that Warfarin is a cause of my weight gain and after seeing and reading these comments, I'm more convinced that she's right and I'm not crazy. My doctor says that Warfarin does not cause weight gain. Thanks for sharing you all's stories which has given me some ease that I wasn't making this up.

yes im in total agreement.! my doctor told me that its not the coumadin thats making me gain weight . wrong! i was going to weight watchers and wasn't losing a pound. my stomach has gotten so big and all the pounds are going around my belly and hips. im alive! so i decided im going to keep eating healthy, exercise when i can, and not beat myself up for the weight. the blood clot treatment is more important than me being a size 12.(smile)

No.. After reading these articles and replies, I believe that weight gain is the nature of blood thinners "period". [Im currently taking Brillinta] Now I'm not saying that sugar intake and our eating habits have no effect. But what I am saying is that blood thinners do something in your body to make you gain weight. I don't know, maybe it has something to do with the blood sugar levels... "Just guessing".

I kept blacking out and had to stay in the hospital for a week. I was placed on large doses of coumadin...my weight was stable for two years..I gain 35 lbs in a month and they thought I was nuts. I know it happened, with eating less mind you, to try and stave off the gain..still cannot rid of it...

I strongly stand by the hypothesis that Coumadin causes weight gain. After my CVT and subsequent diagnosis of APS in 2009, I've been on Coumadin non-stop except for during my two pregnancies, when they switched me over to Lovenox injections. When on Coumadin, I gained nearly 60 lbs. I am active. I ride Century bike rides with my husband. I'm out and about with my children and dog daily. I eat healthy and watch my sugar intake. 60 lbs! Now, when I was pregnant--a time when most women gain weight in the double digits--I LOST weight. Both pregnancies! Once I no longer had the warfarin in my system, my body was able to properly metabolize again. However, any doctor is going to tell you this is anecdotal at best. The best you can take away from this board is that you are not alone in your weight struggle--and that yes, if you have an alternate option besides warfarin, it might be worth the switch. For myself, I'm stuck with warfarin for the long haul. Just hope my husband continues to put up with the weight gain!

I've been on warfin since Dec. 2013 when I had my DVT, they said I had 2 clots in my legs and one near my lungs, they said I should not be here because of where it was. I has hospitalized for a week and in the IC for 3 days. I was very active till 2000 when I had a back injury and can no longer work. From 2000 till my DVT in Dec 2013 I was not very active only because of the pain shooting down my leg and in my lower back. I gained a little weight but nothing like now I'm pushing 375lbs now and have not changed my habits much expect feeling like c**p most of the time. I am on other drugs also but the only new one is the warfin. I should point out I weighed 275lbs before my DVT and I weighed 220lbs when I was injured. I have been told I will be on warfin the rest of my life I'm 54 now and hope something can be done I have no insurance and really need some sort of professional help to do the right exercises so I don't do more damage to my back, but with no insurance it's not looking good. Well that's my life I hope nobody ends up like me the uninsured don't stand a change.
