Thanks to all of you. My doctor is telling me that it is me and not the coumadin. I am a relatively good eater and since being on this medication for 1 1/2 month I have gained 25 pounds in the same areas as most of you have stated. I did not have this problem prior to taking couumadin. I just wish the doctors would realize that all medicines do interact with everyone the same way and be a little more sensitive to the concerns of the patients. We have had these bodies all our lives and know when something is wrong.

Thank you, all of you for these posts. I. Was put on Coumadin for P.E in my right lung, I asked my Dr. If I can continue with working out, and was told yes...I workout 6 days a week. Bootcamp, TRX, and Yoga yet here i am a month in and I have noticed bloating in the belly...I have no choice but to continue with Coumadin because Xarelto caused hemorrhaging. I have to stay on for 3-6 months... hoping not to gain anymore weight...Want to stay healthy and remain active without any further problems.!

I am thinking about having the gastric bypass because I have put on 75 lbs since going on Warafrin since 2008. Did you take yourself off again? Did it make a difference? I, like you, am supposed to take it the rest of my life for Lieden Factor 5. I am to the point of stopping taking it and let nature do what it's going to do.

So interested to hear your story, my 18 year old daughter is on life long warfarin, due to a blood clot at 16 which revealed a genetic blood clotting problem. Her weight which was normal before warfarin has steadily risen along with low energy levels, we are hoping to find a new medication for her future that might alleviate these things. I would love to know how you are feeling after being off warfarin for a year or so.

After reading these replies I feel very lucky because I've been on coumadin/warfarin now for over 2 years and I've managed to lose 35lbs. I have to admit that I totally changed my lifestyle in terms of eating and exercise when I was put on the drug because I wanted to be become healthier to makeup for the fact I was taking a medication (I'm a lifer at 33). I eat large amounts of vitamin k fruits and vegetables and limit my added sugars. I also do T-25 on a daily basis. I was able to lose the 35lbs within 3 months and have kept it off ever since (I'm no longer trying to lose weight, just maintain).

There are new anticoagulants. Maybe trying one of those will not have the weight gain side effect . Gastric bypass may not help. If medication caused the weight gain why will eating less from surgery help it come off ?

I have tried Coumadin, Warfarin, Eliquis, and Xarelto, in the stated order, and they all contributed to weight gain. I went back to taking Warfarin, halved my daily intake of food while cutting carbs by 75%, while adding short intervals or jogging for 30 minutes, 4 times per week. For clarity, I'm not recommending this for anyone, we're all different and it's a very difficult thing to do. In this way, I was able to get down from 221 lbs, to 192, and very close to my target weight of 184 lbs.

The pharmaceutical industry is hiding additional side effects for profits!! Warfarin is a naturally occurring compound that is cheap to synthesize. I've been on Warfarin for 19 years, so I can say I've been around the block with this drug. Before a medical issue in September 1997, I was a 6'2, 183lb, single digit BMI athletic machine. After September 1997 I have been on a roller coaster. That roller coaster includes two artificial heart valves, a stroke, an 87lb weight gain, and a back injury. When I was up to 270lbs, my lifestyle sucked! I ate like c**p and drank too much high calorie craft beer. When I cleaned up a bit I lost about 10 lbs. Knowing what I know now, that 10lbs was most likely just excessive water retention. Ok, what is next? I started eating even more clean and started walking. That worked for a while and got me down to 248lb. Unfortunately my back injury and right lower leg nerve damage did not allow me to continue with walking. Once again, it was time to reinvent the wheel. Ok, I will go back to one of my early passions, cycling. After several hundred miles from June 2012 to December 2012 I was able to lose a whopping 8lbs. Damn, time to tweak the program again. In 2013 I rode a little over 2200 miles and at one time got down to 227lb. The week before I weighed 227lb I weighed 235lb, went camping, ate like c**p, did ride my bike while camping , and drank more than normal craft beer. The new factor during the weight loss was water from a natural spring and everything was cooked on iron skillets...who knows. By the end of December I was back up to 235lb. In 2014 I slacked off on riding and only did a little over 1200 miles. In 2014 went back up to 246lb. DAMN!!! In 2015 I wanted to push harder. In 2015 I rode a little over 3200 miles. Even after my best year, I only went down to 234. Well it is 2016 and I'm still looking for a fix. Since June 2012 I've put in 7,711 miles on the bike and only have 14lbs to show. This year I'm going after 4,000 miles and I am on track after 2 months. Again, I'm hovering at 235 and I'm about ready beat the sh*t out of the next doctor who tells me I need to go on a diet and exercise or Warfarin doesn't have weight related side effects. I could continue to ramble on and talk about what blocking Vitamin K1, K2, and K3 does to the body especially athletic performance, but I have to change and get my fat ass on my bike and ground out some more miles.

Pleased to find this page. Stroke at 32 and 34 weeks pregnant been on warfarin for 13 years and will be for life. I am always on the go but find it so hard to keep weight off. It takes weeks to lose just 1 pound that can go back on and more overnight for no apparent reason. I maintained my weight for 10 years but the last 3 yeArs have put on weight and it won't budge. Even dieting, skiing, walking just doesn't work. I am not huge but 178 pounds 10 of which just won't shift. so demoralising when you try so hard and fail. Daily battle to be good and do more just to stay the same.

I have been following the Weight Watchers program for two years and had my weight reduced and stabilized at my goal for a year and a half, until I was prescribed Warfarin 2 months ago. Since that time my weight has increased and am having difficulty bringing it down to my goal weight. I suspect fluid retention is the problem now that I'm taking Warfarin.

Yep, me too ! I have added a size since being on Coumadine, but my Cardio and my GP tell me it's not due to Coumadine ! I don't eat a lot, I excercise which I did not do before I took Coumadine, I never put on weight before, so... bit of a coincidence ....

I had a DVT in my left leg 25 years ago after the birth of my first child. Dr's thought it was stressed of pregnancy and the pill after. I was on and off for 8 years when they did a full work up during my 3rd pregnancy, finding I had factor v. I was always on the bigger side (around 175) but after the birth of my daughter they put me on Warfarin for life. I then gained weight slowly and peaked at about 215. In 2013 I made a major leagues restyle change, watched what I ate, counted calories, and started exercising. I was able to lose 65lbs in about 10 months!

However after losing all that my INR results were low and they kept upping my dose. This took about 6-8 months. The Anticoagulation clinic said because of my weight loss my metabolism was higher and I needed a higher dose. Almost DOUBLE in fact! I was able to maintain my loss for about a year then slowly it's been coming back. Only up about 15 lbs, but it won't budge! I thought it was because I was so fatigued and feeling so lazy. And I didn't know WHY! All these comments have opened my eyes and now I see it's not just me! I've been feeling terrible ever since the upped dosage! Extreme laziness as I call it. Feeling somewhat depressed because of it. Headaches all the time. And I think my ear problems (clogginess) is related as well. I'm extra cold. Can't stand the heat. Bloated! I swell when I walk, even just around the block.
It sucks to have to be on this med. but I'm glad to be alive!
