Hello. I am being treated for hyperthyroidsim due to graves' disease. They put me on Tapazole and Metoprolol.

I have extreme fatigue every day. I can be awake only about one and ahalf to two hours, or sometimes two and a half hours. Then I have to sleep or lie motionless, for another hour and a half, while my mind races, or I just go into another altered mental state somewhere. Then I can do stuff for another hour and a half, then sleep another hour, or so, and repeat the cycle.

I can't work or do other stuff because of it.

Also I have pressure in my head, soreness and numbness in my head, mostly at the top and back.

Also I get anxious and overwhelmed by having a lot of people around when I'm not in the awake mode. I say stupid things and get worried about what they must think, because I'm not in control of what I'm doing. That causes more anxiety, and so on. I know anxiety can be a symptom of hyperthyroidism. Can it also be related to Metoprolol or Tapazole?

When I get so tired I can't think straight and it's hard to keep my eyes open if I have to do something, even drive.

My blood levels of thyroid hormone are coming back to normal. The doctor thinks I should be ok to go back to work soon, but I do not have the energy to stand up and teach students for 2 hours at a time all day. I can't even visit friends or stand up and cook a fried egg at the wrong time of day.

So i don't know what would cause the problems I have. Do you have any ideas?

I just read that Metoprolol can cause fatigue, but can it cause it that bad that you can't do anything for most of the day?

What about Tapazole? Can the medicines be causing my sypmtoms?
I would like to get better now!

Thanks, Rachel S.

Yes, both Metoprolol and Tapazole can cause drowsiness. Since your thyroid hormone level is coming down to normal, ask your doctor if it is ok to reduce the dosage of Tapazole. Also ask if you can use an alternative drug for Metoprolol without the drowsiness side effect. You may also be eligible for temporary disability because of your condition.

I have been on Metoprolol for two years. I feel like a total zombie from 3 pm and after. I feel depressed and very fatigued. I feel incompetent. I am almost worried that I am getting dementia. I cant tolerate anything. It didn't start out this bad. I am on Metoprolol succinate 25 mg bid. I have to lay down at 3pm, but ironically I cant sleep at night.
