My grandmother has diabetes, she got it when was 54 years old, and it is type 2. Now my mom is worried because I like sweets and am a bit overweight, but I exercise and actually, don't feel like have a problem. I thought that diabetis type 2 is not hereditary disease, is it? What are the risk factors for diabetes for elder people? Is it just food and nutrition habits? Are skinny people protected from diabetes? I'm 18 years old, female.

Losing on weight, even a little can be helpful, reducing carbohydrates and fat intake and exercising are also recomeded for decreasing the risk. Physical activity play big role, and healthy nutritional habits too. This is also the part of the treatment, when disease has already occured. So, it is better to be the part of prevention, then curing, in fact diabetes can not be cured, it only can be kept under control and is life threatened disease.
