At 29, I think I am just finding out what hemorrhoids are and that I may have had internal hemorrhoids for some time. Two days ago after a day of heavy lifting, I developed a very painful and seemingly large lump. It is painful enough I feel like I should see a doctor. I have full insurance but not a general practitioner. Is any gastroenterologist the right kind of doctor to see?

As far as I know, you can’t see a gastroenterologist without a referral from a GP. If a GP can’t figure out the problem, or finds it necessary for a specialist, they will give you a referral. It is usually how it is done. GPs can handle many problems including some GI, skin and other problems and you may not even need a specialist.

However, procedures may differ from continent to continent as well as from country to country. If a gastroenterologist would see you, of course they could have a look.
