Hello! My father had shingles and his condition was really difficult. When he thought his problems were over he started to feel terrible pain again. His doctor diagnosed post herpetic neuralgia and explained this was some kind of nerve inflammation caused by herpes virus as well. He prescribed gabapentine. My father used to take ibuprofen and he forgot to ask his doctor should he take it with gabapentine or not. Does ibuprofen neutralize gabapentine?

Hello! Gabapentin is usually used for the management of post herpetic neuralgia which is a nerve pain caused by the herpes virus. It is also used in treatment after surgeries and tissue injuries. It is necessary for your father to discuss any medicine he takes, including over-the counter preparations. Gabapentine may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness which could be the case with pain relievers as ibuprofen. Although combination of gabapentine and ibuprofen in trials performed on rats showed good results and this combination may prove useful in managing post-injury pain states in humans this is still not common combination.
