For as long as I can remember I have always had a fast heart rate, I can often feel my heart beating in my chest and it feels like I can hear it in my ears. I also have low blood pressure, although it isn't low enough to need medication. Often I feel light headed, I don't know how to explain the sensation but the closest I can describe it is that once I fainted and got a similar feeling just before, it is almost like a rush of blood to the head? Sometimes I get a pain in my chest that is sudden and like a stabbing pain, it happens in the centre of my chest, slightly to the left, where you assume your heart is i guess. When this happens I can only take very shallow breaths or I get more stabbing pains, this happens fairly infrequently which is why I haven't been to the doctors about it. Does anyone know what might be wrong with me?

As far as the chest pain is concerned it really is best to visit a doctor for a checkup, no matter how infrequent the pain may be. When it comes to this it really is better to know for sure that nothing is wrong. But lightheadedness such as you describe is definitely caused by low blood pressure. In fact, lightheadedness is one of the main symptoms of low blood pressure. It also can lead to headaches and feelings of tiredness and weakness. When it happens next time eat something very salty – salt is proven to help blood pressure rise, but of course, you don’t want to overdo it because it also can have a lot of bad effects to your body in large amounts.

I can't believe no one has mentioned POTS. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is sometimes confused with anxiety. Problem is... anxiety doesn't cause low blood pressure but this important issue is often overlooked. I have POTS and I hope you find a doctor that can diagnose you or put you in there clear here.

Hello there...
In general, people who do a lot of cardio exercise will have lower resting heart rates. Most likely, you haven't exercised enough during your life. You really should try to do more cardio exercise to see if that lowers your resting heart rate.

I've read several articles that suggest that people with low resting heart rates live longer. So even though you probably do not have an immediate cause for concern, in the long term you're probably going to be better off if you do more cardio exercise.

Regards,
Mike

I've had the same issues my whole life and, regardless of what other people say, it's not necessarily related to being out of shape or being inactive. I was a competative gymnast for 13 years & I still have a resting heart rate between 100 & 120 (even higher when I was pregnant). I can also empathize with the chest pain. They are very sharp and I've often described at as feeling like a mini heart attack. Short, shallow breaths is all I can muster during these episodes, as well. Doctors have told me it's bronchial spasms but really have no remedy for it other than to rest when it happens. I've been working with a trainer lately who found the high heart rate/low blood pressure combination odd & suggested not pushing too hard with the cardio. Something to consider. Anyway,  I've yet to find any real answers but I hope you do! Good luck!

I have all these symptoms although the stabbing heart pains just began (they used to be just a heaviness) I'm seeing a cardiologist now. I am also 54 and just had my first heart attack. But prior to that I asked a number of doctors about my symptoms (I'm also anemic) to no avail. They said BP wasn't low enough and blood count wasn't low enough to cause my symptoms. Then I met a wise female doctor who told me this and it all fell in place...Your body is like a car and any time you get dehydrated it 's like having low oil. Add some oil/water or gatorade it will bring your pressure back up. I said that's it but I drink coffee, lots of water in that. She said any drink with caffeine just sucks the fluids right back out. I didn't know! I tried it next time I felt my symptoms coming on and after drinking down a bottle and another half bottle of water I was good as new. It was like night and day. So I would stay away from the salt and give the water a shot. Hope this helps.
