Hello! During my sister’s gyno routine she has been diagnosed with uterine fibroids. What exactly are they, how can a woman realize she has them and are they dangerous? Thank you in advance!!!

Uterine fibroids or are areas of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue that develop in or on the uterine wall. There could be one or many uterine fibroids. They are usually diagnosed as tumors of the female pelves and a most common reason for hysterectomy. They are benign and rarely cancerous. Most of the time women don’t even notice any symptoms. But, there can be some heavy bleeding during menstruation, bleeding between periods, anemia, a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen, frequent urination, pain during sexual intercourse, or low back pain. There, I hope I helped a bit!
