I got two of the front teeth on the bottom done with alloderm(donor tissue) approaching a month ago. The procedure itself went very smoothly, the most painful part is the first needle they stick in to numb everything, and that is just a little pinch. I took my pain meds they prescribed the day of the surgery, but there was no pain when I woke up the next day so I never took any more. I went to a cottage the whole weekend right after the surgery and was able to drink and enjoy myself. The only issue is that it being right at the front of my mouth meant I couldn't really bite into anything, so anything I ate had to be broken into smaller pieces to get to the back on my mouth to chew.

I assume the donor tissue takes longer to heal than when you take it from the roof of your mouth. Mine is still not fully healed at almost a month, but it is getting there(luckily I can eat everything again, other than maybe biting into an apple). The dentist will take out some of the stitches in a few days so I will see what she says then(they are non-dissolvable, I assume because it takes too long to heal for dissolvable stitches). Other than being a little puffy in the face for the first week, and not being able to bite into stuff, it has been a pretty simple process. I skipped playing soccer the first weekend out of fear of taking a hit to the face, but I played each weekend after that. Other than the day of the surgery you probably wouldn't even need another day off work unless you are a boxer or something.

I had a gum graph done on Tuesday (six days ago) and although it has not been a pleasant experience ... it has not been that bad.  I was able to eat soft food immediately afterwards. I have been able to eat since, and resume normal activities. The bruising is not pleasant, and the initial antibiotic made my stomach upset ... but again, able to move on! It's day six and I think I am going to make it.

I had the gum grafting surgery on Monday morning and it is now Thursday afternoon.  I had gum removed from the roof of my mouth to cover most of my botton gums.  They used gas and I had pain shots in my mouth. The roof of my mouth was covered with a wax material to protect it while healing.  I did not feel any pain during the surgery, but about 45 minutes later at the pharmacy, I started feeling intense pain.  I was prescribed vicodins which worked very well, but as soon as they wore off, the pain came back.  The first day was bad, the second day was okay, but I have to say today (fourth day) is pretty bad.  The roof of my mouth feels like it was severly burned as if I ate something super hot.  My face is very swollen so I've been icing since the surgery as much as I can.  The stitches are starting to irritate my mouth in certain areas.  Try not to eat anything with chunks in it.  Use the rinse they give you and swab the area with stitches, but be careful.  What you eat is important because you don't want particles getting stuck in the stitches which will cause more pain. I've been eating "Idahoan" mashed potatoes which are easy to make and eat.  "Wolfgan Puck" makes soups without chunks.  I've also been living off of "Odwalla" shakes and "Hunts" Snack Pack puddings.  It's important not to eat anything chunky.  I've read people recovering in a few days, but I had most of my bottom teeth done and it's been four days with not much improvement.  I think it will take a full week with very little talking and a lot of resting to feel back to normal.  My stitches are coming out next Thursday if all goes well.

I had surgery last Thursday.  It is now Tueday. Never felt a thing during surgery other than the prick of needle for Novicane. I had to have the roof of my mouth cut on both sides as I needed enough tissue to go from eye tooth to eye tooth at the bottom. The roof of my mouth does feel like a bad pizza burn on both sides. Can only eat soft food that is room temp. The lower gum area has not bothered me at all. Have had soreness in the jaw area on both sides of face. You will need to take the 800 mg. Ibruprofen and possibly the pain med. if given. I am still taking Ibruprofen during the day and take a pain med. at night. The stitches I had at the top came out by Sunday. Very grateful! They were worrisome. Never had any bleeding thankfully. Did not really have any swelling either.  Will see the doc again in a week for a checkup.

I had my full mouth - upper and lower - done on Tuesday and as of today - Friday I can honestly say it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. I got donor tissue rather than have it taken from the top of my mouth and that has helped a lot.  Swelling is going down, pain is minimal and controllable now without heavy drugs.  The only irritant is the little ends of the stitches that poke a bit.

One of the hardest parts has been spending my days in front of television where I have come to realize food is featured in at least every other commercial.  Boost and Ensure are not horrid, but I'd really like something that fills the stomach and tempts the taste buds.

The anticipation was worse than the reality so far.  Hope your experience is as good as mine has been. I'm glad I chose to have it all done at once rather than the option of doing it in two parts.  Don't know that I would have gone back for the second time.

Had it done today. I have never had even a filling before and hate needles. Apart from my fainting from the needle, the actual surgery was not that bad. I haven't taken any pain killers yet, and don't think I will need them if it stay like this. My dentist used donor tissue to avoid cutting my pallet. The recovery is longer, about 3 months for the last stitches to come out.

Hello,

I just had a graft done today. The doc took a piece from the roof of my mouth and transplanted to an outer bottom tooth. The process was not bad. Yes, I am still oozing blood but it is not worse than the wisdom teeth extraction I had last Thursday! I know it sounds crazy, but I got all four wisdom teeth pulled last Thursday and went in today for the tissue graft. Nonetheless, it's not too bad. After getting the shots to numb the area, I closed my eyes and felt nothing. I am loading up on OTC pain meds which seem to be doing the trick. The challenge I face is food:). Take small bites and ensure you have soft food and you will be fine.

I just had it done last Thursday. The best part about it, it was relatively quick procedure. I was out in an hour. I definetly recommend wearing the stent they give you for the roof of your mouth for more than 1 day. I just took it out last night. I will say this is day 3rd day and where they put the tissue down in the front of my mouth is still sore. With that said, just one advil cuts the pain enough. I never had to fill my vicodin prescription. It depends on your pain tolerance. I will say lots of novicaine is used and once it kicks in you don't feel anything. I believe you have the option of IV sedation and I chose not to do that. I wish you the best of luck and hope that helps.

I feel like I have more pain on the roof of my mouth on the 7th day than I did at first.

I can only eat or dring things that are luke warm.  Anything too cold or too hot just sets off

the roof of my mouth like it is on fire.

I had gum graft surgery yesterday on three teeth.  I chose to stay awake for the procedure.  My dentist was fabulous and talked me through the entire thing.  I took Vicodin when I got home and before bed yesterday.  I haven't taken any pain meds today, and I have no pain.  Yesterday, I stayed in bed most of the day.  I iced my mouth until I went to bed.  In all, it was about 12 hours on and off every 20 minutes.  I drank a ton of ice water.  I ate a yogurt, scrambled eggs and a Frosty with no problem.  I look forward to rinsing my mouth in a bit.  I can brush, but my gum graft is on my front teeth.  As I'm not supposed to lift my lip, it is going to make brushing difficult.  So far, I'm having a great experience.  I have very little swelling today, but my dentist said that can occur more around day three.  He told me to continue icing today to help with potential swelling.  I'm so sorry to those who are having/have had so much pain with this procedure.  I'm feeling very thankful to be having a relatively easy time with my recovery.  I hope it continues.

I had gum graft surgery 9 days ago.  The surgery was not a problem, but the recovery has been SO much more difficult than I had imagined.  The first few days I was extremely weak, throwing up and listless.  I would recommend to anyone to be careful with any advil, aleve or narcotic pain relievers. You can't take these on an empty stomach and it is difficult after this surgery to eat enough.  The mouth guard/retainer they gave me was so tight that it makes my head throb when I wear it and gave me a migraine. However, I cannot eat or drink without it. On about day four I had extreme pain on the left side of my face. It's as if all of my teeth ache and even my ear on that side.  It feels similar to a bad sinus infection I had once. I can eat better now, if I put the retainer in, so I do feel stronger. I am still waking with pain 3-4 times during the night and I am needing to take aleve and tylenol through out the day.  I am worried that the doctor hit or damaged some type of nerve in my face. I pray that this pain ends soon. I hope I never have to do this again.
