I had mine done a week ago & got my stitches out this morning. I'm SO happy and much more comfortable!!! But it wasn't an easy week.

Here's some tips:

1) This procedure is not a joke.  Recovery will hurt. Make sure to take time off work or shedule your appt on a Friday afternoon.

2) Don't talk.  Even if you're numbed up from pain meds, talk as little as possible

3) Resign yourself to the fact that you'll only be eating ice cream, pudding, yogurt, protein shakes for at least a week.  Shop accordingly prior to the procedure.  Don't even try things like mashed potatoes or soft pastas, as the food can get caught in between your cheeks & gums

4) Keep your mouth clean.  I've been cleaning the non-affected areas with q-tips and holding mouthwash in my mouth for a few minutes.  My mouth feels so much more comfortable when it's clean.

5) Ask your Dr to hook you up with a roof guard for your mouth.  Mine took an impression during my consult so that it would be ready on surgery day.  This has helped tremendously.

6) Be patient.  This is major surgery.  You'll need down time.  Think about it like getting your wisdom teeth pulled.

I had my tissue graft on Tuesday (4-7). This was a gingival graft, not a connective graft so it was a little less invasive than some of you may have experienced. They gave me Novocain--no gas. Besides my anxiety, there was no pain. I've experienced minimal pain since then, but am having a lot of swelling and discomfort in my face. Eating is difficult, also. I ended up bleeding quite a bit the night after my surgery--applied pressure and it was fine. You'll do great!

Do NOT have this procedure. I had what was supposed to be the first of three in a three year plan. I will not be having any others. The pain is excruciating and debilitating, at the harvest site and the graft site. The death breath alone is reason enough not to do it - and it's literally from the rotting tissue sewn to your face. I bruised; I swelled unbelievably. The pain is so overwhelming/distracting that I can't work - 6 days out. I can't talk; and I'm too hideously mangled looking to be seen by the public, anyway. I can't eat or drink ANYthing without blowtorch pain. Someone said that the donor site feels like a pizza burn? Well if by PIZZA BURN you mean CHAIN SAW, then yeah. And the kicker was talking to my friend who had years of these done: he ultimately lost all the teeth at the graft sites. So he may have lost them anyway, or maybe he would not have. My official position is that I would rather lose every tooth in my f-head than to ever do this again. I hate myslf for buying trustingly into their car-salesman pitch and putting myself in their hands. DON'T DO IT!

I agree with you in regard to NOT investigating the procedure prior to having it done. I am on day 9 after a skin graft, I was rushed to emergency room for hemoraghing early yesterday morning. Never experienced anything that scary in my life and have had 4 kids natural, ovary rupture and various other surgical procedures. My mouth was literally full of blood clots and they asked if I would agree to blood transfusion. ER finally controlled bleeding, went back to dental surgeon who cauterized palate wound. It hasnt been 24 hours without bleeding but am hopeful. Good luck to anyone else having this done. Bleeding is a serious consequence, take care.

I had my third round of gum grafting completed last Tuesday (almost week ago) where like the previous two they used skin palette from the roof of my mouth. While recovery went smoothly for the last two, this time I am feeling excrutiating pain where even to drink water hurts. I am on painkillers every 6 hours or so. It is not so much the grafting site that is painful but the roof of my mouth feels like it is on fire and anything like water, yogurt, smoothies brings on pain that almost sends me through the roof. I am supposed to have 1 or 2 more grafting a done but I am extremely leary about doing so after this experience. The pain is too much and I'm getting sick of hardly eating anything when I'm hungry all the time. Does anyone know of the alternative to this which is called "pinhole surgical procedure"? I would be interested in hearing about this from anyone.

I just had my gum grafting and I'm thinking about how to clean my mouth in the morning. The doctor didn't mention anything about that and I didn't ask too. I have oral B mouth wash but I think it's gonna be too strong for my mouth at the moment. Can anyone tell me what they used during this period?

You might not be able to do any exercise. I tried to carry a shopping bag after my surgery and I felt a lot of pain. And my doctor told me to stay away from anything that needs energy for the next few days.

I've had 3 other grafts but this last one is very painful nothing like the other 3, I had done. Did not expect this amount of pain at all. I asked the doc and he said, he had to manipulate around back tooth. Could this be why I'm in so much pain? Ne we had this amount of pain before, same Doctor.

Agree ...this time around for me is not easy, very painful. Not sure why the other two I had done I had little to no pain. This is intense.

I've had all 4 sides done and had no problem. You must have had a horrible Doctor that didn't know what they were doing. If you don't do it you'll lose your teeth. For me that's not an option.

I'm on day 7 post gum graft and am hurting like crazy so I feel you. Tooth sensitivity and pain is so much worse now than during the first 3 days. This is absolutely miserable and I hope I never have to have another.

I had grafting on the front bottom portion of my teeth. The first 2 days after were not to bad. Then on day 3 after surgery the pain became worse and now it is day 6 and the pain is still bad. I found out through phoning the doctor because of bleeding. I was suppose to have received a retainer to put in my mouth when i sleep. I did not get one when i left the doctor's office. I am handling the pain with pain meds that the dr prescribed for me. I am taking the meds about 3 or 4 times a day. I am one who never takes anything for pain. I will be so glad when this heals. I am eating sugar free jello. I am going to buy protein shakes to drink until my mouth heals.
