I am 58 and am postmenopause for 10 years. I gave birth to 5 children. I had to have a LEEP procedure because I was having a nasty discharge, High Grade Lesions. So the LEEP went well and no bleeding first day. then for 5 days after slight bleeding then It stopped completly for whole day and I was so happy. But OH My I work afrernoon shift 3 to 11PM and at end of shift I started gushing. HUGE Clots!! I was bleeding 10 times worse than any heavy period I ever had.It was scary. I rushed home and told my husband to take me to emergency room. Of course it took them 4 hours to get an OBGYN doc to come and put the medicine on my Cervix to stop the bleeding.I had called the docs service and the on call doc said I did the right thing to go to ER. Yea better than bleeding to death. They had givin me one bag of IV but it wasn't enough after they put medicine on, my blood pressure dropped and hardly a pulse I started sweating and had to poop. They finall realized I was going down they got me another IV and brought me back. I felt weak for a day and took off from work for two days and weekend. My doctor told me to come in on tuesday. So I will see what she says. No one told me this could happen. But as I see It has happened alot.Hope I keep healing. Good luck ladies.

I had a LEEP procedure done 2 weeks ago tomorrow and it's been a really hard time. Just a week from my procedure, I began bleeding extremely heavily, uncontrollably and passing large clots. I was so scared. My OBGYN told me that I may bleed but he never said hemorrhage! I began soaking pads and passing clots (from the size of a small marble to the size of a small egg) and it didn't matter if I was sitting, standing, etc. I had been taking it easy, doing all the right things but ended up in the ER where the OBGYN on call came and applied Monsels in huge amounts, stuck a tampon in me and sent me home with instructions to go see the OBGYN first thing in the morning. So I did,and I saw the one who performed the LEEP and he ended up re-cauterizing my cervix and sent me home. Yesterday morning I began hemorrhaging again and again, he re-cauterized. He told me he is confident that he fixed it and that if I bleed a little it is okay and just take it easy (which I am anyways) and low and behold I AM bleeding :/ However, it is nothing like it was the last 2 times and I am crampy so maybe it's my period..IDK..but I agree with the others who said to get right to the ER..

I had my LEEP done on March 15th, 2013, which was 4 weeks ago today. It feels like it's been much longer than that because of the complications and stress it caused.

Firstly, I wish I would have been better prepared by my doctor for the physical and emotional consequences of this procedure. They made it all sound so much simpler than it actually was, mainly because they only focused on describing the procedure and not on what I could expect in the days and weeks following.

March 15, 2013 - Had the procedure at 10 am. I was put to sleep, so I didn't feel pain or discomfort. I was sent home at about 1045 after having some time snap out of the effects of anesthesia. I went home and stayed in bed the rest of the day, feeling a little groggy. No pain, no cramps, very light spotting.

March 17 - March 20 - Burned, smelly pieces of myself started falling out of me. This was a bit horrific for me because I had not been expecting it. Although I was able to shower normally, albeit without using soap (as my Dr recommended), I could smell the burned flesh and was very startled by small leathery strips of skin that gradually made an appearance on my pad. I didn't know if I should tug them out or leave them alone when they would only partially exit, so I opted for letting them fall out on their own. I continued to have brown-red spotting through this time.

March 20 - No more leathery bits falling out. I developed a very high fever over night and became concerned bc it could be a sign of infection. The fever continued despite taking some tylenol so I went to the doctor's office. Apparently I had in inopportune flu, but no infection. To my relief, I also found out that the region of my cervix that was removed had benign growth on it - no cancer! YAY!!...Light-brown spotting and funky smell continued lightly as well even though I resumed washing with summer's eve.

March 27- Almost 2 weeks after the procedure and I started bleeding heavily on the morning of the 26th, but stopped bleeding for the rest of the day until the bleeding resumed in the evening. I was unsure if this was my period or a complication of the procedure. I didn't have any unusual cramping, I never really have issues with cramps after the 1st day of menstruation anyway. The bleeding got worse: I had to buy those special overnight super pads (it was actually pretty hilarious because I'd never used one that was so long and had adhesive in the butt area, so it took me a few minutes to understand its placement). My thin flex-wing Always pads weren't making it past an hour, but the huge ones (Rite Aid brand) were good for about 2 hours. I googled and found the one hour rule: if you soak your pad in 1 hour or less, go to your Dr! However, what kind of pad getting soaked in an hour?! standard or heavy? I needed specifics. The evening of the 26th it got worse; The CLOTS!! They didn't cause pain, but wow were they uncomfortable! I usually have a few small clots when I menstruate, maybe the size of the tip of a finger, but these were about 5x that. And from what I read, they get a whole lot bigger than that for many women after having this procedure. I went in to see my Dr the next afternoon. She performed a sonogram and reported no abnormalities in the procedure area. She also couldn't explain the heavy bleeding. But she did prescribe some hormones (Medroxyprogesterone, the generic version of Provera) to stop the bleeding for two weeks. The plan was that the hormones would regulate my cycle and allow enough time for the surgery site to completely heal before I had my period, hopefully a normal one, again.

March 27- April 9th - I made sure to take the pill at the same time every day. one day, on the 29th, I forgot and took it 3 hours late and the floodgates opened again. It was scary and messy, but once the pill kicked in the bleeding stopped again. I started to get lighter bleeding on the 5th. My Dr told me I would start bleeding as soon as I finished the pills, but since this bleeding was like my normal period, I just let it be. I continued to take the pill and continued to have normal bleeding until the 9th, also the last day I took the pill. Then, when I was waiting for the horror to begin again, nothing happened! The funky smell was also barely noticeable to me at this point.

April 12, 2013 (Today)- It's been 4 weeks since the LEEP. I was scheduled to see my Dr on the 17th, to get a prescription for birth control pills and follow up, but since I explained what happened while I was taking the Provera, she felt comfortable canceling our appt and simply calling in my prescription to the pharmacy. She thinks the bleeding I had while on the Provera was my period and that it's back to normal. Since the 9th I've had no fresh blood, no light-brown spotting either, and no funky smell. ~ Relief ~ I have taken birth control pills in the past and I had discontinued them bc I wanted a break, but because I've always had an erratic menstruation schedule (sometimes I got my period once every 2-3 months) and because I'm concerned that the combination of my irregular periods and the changes this LEEP might have caused will combine to torture me, I'd rather take the pill to keep my menstruation regular.

I've covered the physical stuff, but I think there's a lot of emotional stuff that was important about this experience. Most of the time, I was functional, but I was depressed. First because of the cancer scare, then because the things happening to my body were new and scary and I had not been prepared for them. I took some days off of work to recover when I had the flu and for my appointments and I did my best to eat healthy and feel happy, but it was hard. I'd read that the changes in menstruation for some women where somewhat permanent - that terrified me. I've been lucky to have a light-normal flow since I began menstruating at age 12 (I'm 27 years old now), despite the irregularity in the schedule of my periods, and the accommodations I had to make to manage those days I was bleeding heavily made me fearful about how I'd maintain my active and busy schedule if I had to deal with that kind of bleeding regularly. I still have to wait and see if the coming months will remain normal, but if I don't update this it's because everything went back to normal. Fingers crossed.

I had the procedure done on April 3rd so it has been almost 3 weeks now. For the first couple days I felt fine with no bleeding at all then I started to see bright red blood here and there but nothing serious. It was the "normal' spotting that the doctor tells you to expect. Then by the 5th day I was bleeding pretty heavy. I was bleeding through everything and filling the toilet with blood every time I would pee. I called  my doctor and she told me that it was probably my period. I explained to her that it did not look like my period and that my period was not due for another 11 days. She told me that the Leep can sometime cause your period to start early and I should not worry. Well I took the advice of the doctor and continued to bleed heavily for the next 10 days. me thinking it may have been my period, I waited and did nothing. Then on the 18th, when my period was due, I started to have cramping and clotting. Now to me, this was obviously my period! Now I am still bleeding and having major clotting and can get in to see my doctor until the 25th. I am so frustrated. Ladies, we know our bodies better then the doctor. If you feel that something is not right then you need to be persistent and keep calling until your doctor see's you. My doctor failed to tell me not to do anything like go for walks, work in the garden, squatting  lifting anything slightly heavy. The ONLY instruction that I got was "don't have intercourse for 4 weeks." Well thanks for that advice! Turns out that when you do these things you take the chance of re opening the wound at the site which causes the bleeding. PLEASE, if you are having this procedure make sure that you talk to your doctor in depth about what you need to do when you get home. I myself would suggest doing nothing! Stay off your feet and rest. Take a few days off work if you can. You will feel fine at first but trust me, you will heal allot sooner if you take it very easy for the first week. I am so frustrated with the whole thing. And to boot, the results of the biopsy were"inclusiveness" so the entire thing was a wast of time. MAKE SURE that it is absolutely necessary before you agree to do this because it is not just a simple procedure like they want you to think it is.

hey, i had a leep done for the 2nd time. but this time it was different. 2 days after the leep i coughed and something came out and them it was like all hell broke loose. I went to the er and my doctor admitted me. I had very big clots. and regular pads didn't work. i have to use an adult diaper to catch all the blood and clots. This was so scary. I never have seem that much blood in my life. This is my second night in the hospital and they just got the bleeding under control. It's always better to be safe then sorry. I had my iud removed the same day as the leep and i thought i was having a period but that was not the case. Go to the er. asap. dont wait because you will lose alot of blood.

I had a LEEP done just 3 weeks after a Colposcopy in which a 2 biopsies were taken. After the colposcopy, i ended up going to the ER for heavy bleeding with clots. After an unpleasant 9 hour stay, i was sent home and told that it was my period- i knew it was not. I expected this may happen again after the LEEP and it did, twice. This time i did not go to the ER, i did call the nurse in the clinic that performed the surgery and she again suggested it was my period. I monitored the bleeding and made sure I did not soak a pad front to back within an hour. I took advil( 2 every 4 hours), ate a hard boiled egg with lots of salt and drank lots of water and took my temperature regularly to make sure I did not have a fever.  It stopped almost immediately and there was no sight of any blood or discharge at all for two days. It started again two days later but then stopped after i followed the same procedure. There are confusing instructions out there in general about post LEEP care. I think this can happen regardless of activity level because what doctors etc. neglect to mention is that the cervix moves, daily even depending on where you are in your cycle.

What was your experience after the stitches? Did you bleed afterward? For how long? I am going in tomorrow and will likely need stitches because monsels hasn't worked for me thus far...I hope you will write back so I know what to expect from a similar situation...I'm pretty concerned right now and anxious for the stitches because I don't know if they will work to permanently stop the bleeding.

I had the same experience. I had the leep procedure done 1/19/15 and on 1/31/15 I had a very heavy bleeding with large sized clots. And I had to change my pad every 20 to 30 minutes because I am soak with blood. I did not go to ER so I said I will ride it out until next day. On 2/1/15 the bleeding started to slow down by the evening. On Monday 2/2/15 I called my doctor and she said if the bleeding stop I should be ok and advise me if that happens again to come and see her. I told her this time it happened on the weekend and doctor office was closed. So she said next time if it happens on weekend to go to ER. I too really did not get a direct answer why the heavy bleeding and clots happen. She said I should be ok so crossing my finger that don't happen anymore. It was very scary for me too seeing so much blood and large sized clots coming out.

My situation pretty much mimics yours. I already have a low platelet count...does not help the situation! I had went to the ER the night after, the men working didn't even examine that region and sent me home, saying it would subside. I live alone, I woke up on my stairs...not quite sure how long I had been passed out, scary! The nurses attending to me were joking that it looked like a murder scene (the only thing that made me laugh out loud in 48 hours!) This was a year ago, now I have to go back on Tuesday to have another one...YUK! I am frightened...I still have nightmares from last time!
