I am told by expert in colon and rectal disease that hemmorrhoidectomy is needed. After reading all the posts I am obviously a bit nervous. For those of you who are beyond the 2 month period of recovery, do you think it is worth it in the end? Additionally, assuming no complications, when does everything really return to "normal?"

Well that depends on what kind of hemorrhoids you have (internal/external/both) and how severe the case of them is.
I have not had a hemorrhoidectomy, but am planning on it in the future. From what I read, if everything goes well, which it most likely will, you will feel a whole lot better after the 3 month mark. Just make sure you properly prepare yourself BEFORE the surgery. THat means get yourself on a high fiber diet and adjust to it. Also make sure you have everything ready before surgery, like food and what not. Do not eat anything but high fiber wholesome foods before the surgery!! The key is to get your stools soft, but formed with a tad bit of firmness and to record what it takes to get your stools that way and keep them that way for the rest of your life, especially before and after surgery. Plan on not going back to work for at least a month, maybe 2 months depending on what you do.
There are some really good guides on another forum, but am sure posting that forum here would be a no no. Also me posting my email address is a no no here so I basically can't tell you any more than that. Do your research extensively and make sure you have someone with you if possible for a few days.
So what kind of hemorrhoids do you have? What kind of surgery are you going to have done?? A HEmorrhoidectomy has a few different types of procedures one can have done to them. From everything I read, the traditional method is the best way to go. IT has the least recurrence rate, but is more painful. From what I read, it will be painful, especially after bowel movement, but most likely will be something you will be able to tolerate. Apparently some people exaggerate a little when describing what the pain is like.. but then again we all have the operation done a bit different, like having one hemorrhoid taken out instead of 3, and so on so who really knows.
Overall though, research as much as you can and prepare yourself.

Hello,
I had the surgery in March of 2005. It was much more painful and difficult than I was prepared for to recover. I think my doctor was negligent in explaining the recovery process and in not giving good directions to help with the recovery. Be sure to take mineral oil after surgery as passing stool is extremely painful. Also be sure to get and take the pain medication. I spent most of several days after surgery soaking in a hot tub for relief from the pain. My doctor left a very large and disgusting skin tag on my anus which required another surgery with a different doctor to make my anus something that was somewhat normal again. Make sure your doctor understands that just because it is your anus does not mean you want to have hanging skin tags after surgery. I feel the excess skin could have been removed during the surgery. I took a year to start feeling normal again. Recovery from this surgery made a vegeterian out of me. No more hemmorroids so that is a good thing. I quit my doctor because of his callous attitude about this procedure. Found another doctor for the followup cosmetic surgery and a great nurse who had the surgery herself and she gave me the best advice. Many women have this surgery after child birth. Best of luck. Would I do it again. Probably however I would take time off work, take the mineral oil, talk to the doctor about making my anus smooth again and become a vegeterian years earlier.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I am one week post-op three internal hemmorrhoids and an external skin tag removed. I will say that my recovery hasn't been as bad as I had anticipated. I contribute this to the advice of others - sitz bath every 4 - 6 hours, numbing cream, and pain medicine. I religiously followed this routine for the first three days and had very minimal pain. What I did have was moderate to severe discomfort. The external stitches poke the sides of my rectum. Supposedly these will "fall off like a scab" soon. The edges of the stitches feel like open safety pins. I find that as the swelling goes down there is less for the ends of the stitches to poke. This is where the cream and pain medication are most useful.
The pain of my first BM was about a 1. I had my first BM on day three. Beginning on day two I did a four way rotation of mineral oil, stool softener, water, and Benefiber about 6 hours apart. I had a soft stool and did not hurt a bit. After the BM I didn't even try to wipe, I jumped into the tub with my bottom facing the faucet and rinsed off for several minutes. I believe wiping would have caused severe pain. Rinsing was my best option. I followed up with a Sitz bath and Benzocaine and rested. On day five I ended up with several very soft stools (fruit, raisin bran, whole wheat bread, Benefiber) and was very sore from the irritation. I spent most of day five rinsing my bottom under the bathtub faucet and cleaning the tub.
I am down to about 1 pain pill about every 12 hours. On day two I took two pain pills at a time (allowed by my doctor) and it upset my stomach so much I decided to try one pain pill or I was going to do without or try Ibuprofen and am glad the one pain pill worked.
I still move around very slowly and rest a lot. Prior to the surgery I was terrified by what I had read in blogs. I even called my doctor to ask what do I do when I have a BM and my rectum is torn apart. I seriously thought this would happen from reading the blogs of others. The doctor assured me that I wouldn't die from the pain and once I heard that phrase it made passing my first stool pretty easy. I am still sore but I wanted to let others know that not everyone is in pure agony the entire time.
I wish everyone a speedy recovery.
