I am also experiencing the fecal leakage and some bleeding after BM's. I am at 5 weeks post op for 3 internal and 2 external hemorrhoids. I have some scar tissue that is causing the bleeding and it appears that it is an "open" sore/bump. It hurts to wipe and the blood comes from it...not much, just some on my wet wipes.
The leakage is another story...it seems to seep after I itch a little or sometimes when I sit. It then causes a painful rash if I do not clean the area immediately and apply A&D ointment.
Does this ever stop? My doc is on vacation and rarely spends much time talking to me anyway. He overbooks appts. and does not have the time to listen.
Any advice, suggestions or experiences are very welcome...I am getting depressed over the recovery period, pain and irritation that this has caused. I wish you all the best getting through this type of surgery and look forward to hearing back.
Thanks,
John in Arizona

Everything you are experiencing seems normal if compared to my experience. You are only 5 weeks into it and the journey takes longer. I had mine on Feb. 28 and still have issues, though I promise they start to get better by week 6. The leakage is normal and you just have to figure out a way to deal with. I'm a male and my wife had a great idea which was for me use her maxi pads. So I went to the store and bought the large size version and wore those over my briefs (which I also had to purchase because I was previously a boxer short guy). This made things more comfortable and easy to change out often throughout the day. Make sure you wipe it often so that it doesn't start burning, which it does after a while. Keep tissue at your bedside to wipe down if it hurts in the middle of the night. I found I had to wipe or change the pad ever couple of hours.
The frequent baths I took during the day helped too.
My problem right now is there is still some blood and a good amount of pain with my BM's as they are returning to normal size and in fact seem larger than normal, probably because of the fiber I'm taking. But its night and day difference in terms of the pain I was going through the first 5-6 weeks. I look back now and can't believe I went through with it.
I just wish now I could figure out how to have normal size BM's and not have so much pain everytime. I get pretty scared each night before I go in anticipation of another night of pain, even though its very brief time at this point.

I now, have a problem pushing out my poop. the poop is literally popping out of my anus but i can't push hard enough to get it out. What do i do? I've been taking fiber and stool softener. Should i contact the doctor?

It has been four days of four hour cycles of pain. I am still taking fiber, and added stool softeners, but a bowel movement is extremely painful, bringing on severe pain that only a warm sitz bath makes go away. I am taking Vicodin and acetaminophen for pain every four hours and I am generally fine until I have a bowel movement. I find urination during the day very difficult during and after a bowel movement. I have no problem first thing in the morning before the days traumas start with bowel movements, then it is an on again off again proposition. I am experiencing some residual bleeding and I find clots on my moist wipes, which I use very gingerly.
Knowing what I know now, I would not undergo the surgery again. I would content myself to a high fiber diet with no hot spicy foods (which brought on my attack two months ago). I have never experienced such pain as I have every four hours when I have a bowel movement. I was actually feeling great just before surgery. If you do not have a functional problem and are willing to make permanent lifestyle changes, then don't have the surgery. A surgeon is probably not the best person to depend upon to give you objective advice in this matter. Ask your general practitioner instead or a holistic practitioner and weigh all of the answers and try to sort out the biases.

You guys have me wanting to run for the hills. I guess I would like to hear more about the process you went through prior to deciding to have surgery. What were your symptoms, especially if you had a non-thrombosed external hemorrhoid.
Thanks,

for external hemorroids, it would be a difficult to say if you really need surgery. I'm not a doctor, so, I won't pretend to be one, the choices are still yours.
Internal hemorrhoids , as you are categorized in 4 stages...if you are within the stage 1-2, you might want to consider the rubber band ligitation, which has a 85% chance of non-recurrence if you take care of your dietery in the future. It is an outpatient treatment, and less pain than other surgical treatment.
If it has prolapsed or bulged out , the doctors would usually recommend excising it. If the pain is unbearable, I think the choice is obvious. I have 1 big and 2 medium internals, which I have yet to consider surgery.
It is still bearable, although I have to live with the idea everyday during BM.
Fissure are hard. If the tear does not heal, it might get infections, and you might have bleedings.
For me, I'm still living with my hemorroids, and taking care not to have them flared up with good dietery and care.
Most of the surgical remarks that I have heard from surgery are pretty bad....long pains, complications and more follow ups if surgery wasn't done well.
It amazes me that such a suffering since 1920 has not come much nearer to better understanding and medication.
There are other methods aside from doing it under the knives. ..so farthat I've read...that you might want to research alternative before surgery.
1. Ultroid - electrical/ heat way to shrink the size of the hemorroid.
2. Herbal ..such as VARI-GONE pills from pharmacies...
3. a non-invasive surgical method, by banding the hemorrhoid after injection into the anus veins (a japanese medicine site- some documented usage and findings )....
Lastly, the choice is yours again.
I'm trying other means and if it's beyond my control and pain...I will finally decide the harmonic scalpel excise...but pray I do not need to go there for a few more years....or never.
Good health to you.

My first BM came 3 days after the surgery after being constipated from the pain killers and was excruciating. The first 3-4 weeks were pure hell.
5 weeks later I am back at work (desk job), still wearing my wifes feminine products because of discharge and still have blood at BMs and can't wait to get home for a SitzBath. The BMs are still painful and I still move around like I'm 90 yrs. old because I am still sore in that area. I also "hang out" a bit in that area or have a tag. Does that eventually go away?
This surgery truly has been the worst experience in my life.

I'm having a hemmoroidectomy in September and my doctor is using botox to ease the bowel spasms ( these are supposed to cause most of the ongoing pain) has anyone else had the procedure with this added bonus?

I'm really considering the hemroidectamy but am REALLY nervous about the recovery. I don't mind the initial recovery but I don't want to put myself through this nightmare if they're going to return later.
Can someone please let me know if it's worth the pain of the post-op recovery or just dealing with these things?
I can't imagine trying to gut this out for the rest of my life and I'm desperate to do something about tis. HELP..

Has anyone out there who has had a hemorrhoidectomy give me an idea of how long it will take to recover. I had three internal hemorrhoids removed with traditional surgery. It will be 4 weeks for me tomorrow and I still don't feel even close to 100%. My doctor told me I would be healed in two weeks but I have since learned that all surgeons lie about the recovery time needed for this surgery or no one would get it done.
Also, is it normal to still have some bleeding with a BM at this point too?
I need advice please as I am really depressed by my rate of healing so far.
Thanks!
Hi. I just had a hemorrhoidectomy last week. This is the single most agonizing procedure I could possibly imagine. I went off pain killers after 36 hours because of the constipating effects and I'm now just taking Tylenol (plus a Xanax to sleep at night), doing lots of sitz baths and weathering the storm. Here's what I've been told: it's 4 to 6 weeks until you feel pretty good. It can be 8 weeks or sometimes even more until you stop bleeding and until there's very little discomfort. Every patient is different, of course, but that seems to be what the averages suggest.
I hope this helps. I'm in a great deal of pain at the moment, plus utterly exhausted from all the pain, and I'm wondering why the hell I ever agreed to go through this!
hey i am having this surgery thursday and you guys have all scared me so what do i do know. i have kidney stones and had lots of surgery from that is it worse then kidney surgery?
