What are the symptoms and treatments of hemotomochrosis?

Loading...

There really isn’t much information about hematomacrosis, which is rare genetic disorder, usually found in people of Irish descent. This condition is somewhat opposite of anemia – iron in the blood of people who have hematomacrosis builds up to the dangerous levels. The most specific symptom is fatigue, but if the disease has progressed, there may be various pain symptoms. The current treatment for hematomacrosis is phlebotomy - which essentially is blood-letting or removing iron rich blood periodically over a period of about 3 months.

Hello Liz,

Since Nikols has gave some basic information about your question I would just like to add that iron is an essential element that performs a number of functions in the body. One of these very important functions is including oxygen transport.

Too much of the iron in the body is called hemochromatosis. This condition can cause serious health problems especially problems which are related with the liver. Hemochromatosis can be inherited disease but it can also occur as a secondary disease as a result of some other health problems.

When the treatment options are in question the best way to deal with this condition is regular removal of blood intravenously. This acts as an effective treatment for hemochromatosis because iron is carried by red blood cells and removing part of the blood decreases the amount of iron in the body.
