Hi Kimberly. Welcome to SteadyHealth and glad you are here! Mirena strings are supposed to stick out about a half-inch, which makes them easy to locate, but less likely to poke you are your partner during intercourse. If they are too long, you can have your gynecologist trim them for you - and they will.

I have had two friends use the Mirena IUDs and both have had to return to the doctor to have them shortened. This is typical and not out of the ordinary. Gynecologists are aware that every woman is different and what bugs one might not irritate another. Be aware that the strings don't necessarily shorten with time but the IUD will "settle" into place and that can change the length of the strings. Doctors recommend starting out with the strings about a half-inch out of your body due to the settling time. Best to have them a little longer than too short, especially starting out.

Thanks that help with the worry a little bit I didn't now the strings could move like that. My doc told me that I could loose the strings not that they can get longer. But ya now whatz weird is that this morning I checked the strings and I had trouble finding them cuz they got realy short and yesterday I didnt even have to put my finger inside. (I wish the cramps will stop)

You may have the doctor check this out! Especially with the cramps, that just doesn't add up. If it were me, I would want to know what is going on and take a trip to the doctor to have an exam. The strings should be shortening up a little, but not to where you can't even find them. Have your doctor take a look and let them in on the fact that cramps are severe. There could be something else going on that need attention. Keep us posted as there are probably a lot of women out there who are going through the same thing. Your experience could really shed some light on things! Best of luck to you and again, keep us updated as I am really curious now too.
