My son was recently really sick, he had a fever of 103 for a couple days and our doctor put him on Zithromax. Within two days he was back to normal and we continued to use the antibiotic until we were done(as we were told.) My son then started to break out into a rash all over his body, most of it is gone, but it's really bad on his thighs and butt. He is also having a very hard time going to the bathroom(bowel movements) and cries everytime he tries. When he does go, it's very hard and has blood in it. Could this just be an allergic reaction? He is allegeric to most antibiotics. What concerns me is the rash and his bowel movements.

Hi Kate
Antibiotics can have this effect. Sometimes its the antibiotics themselves, sometimes its the severe disruption to bowel flora that brings on the rash.
My first suggestion would be to check in with his doctor to make sure he isn't reacting to the antibiotics. That's important.
Secondly, anyone taking antibiotics should take probiotics at the same time and for several weeks after to restore the important bowel bacteria. Children under 3 need special probiotics.
Hope this helps

Thank you for that. I just called the doctor because all that is coming out is a little blood and it seems to be getting worse. I had him eat veggies all day, but no luck. I'm waiting for a call right now.

My doctor told me a stool softner to give him.. I forget the name, but it seems to be working. He's still having some pain, but it's getting easier for him.
