My roommate has been coughing all week. She went to the health center here at out college yesterday and they put her on antiboitics for walking pneumonia. They told her she's no long contagious but I've been living with her all week. Is it possible that I could also get it? Would I know by now if I had it or does it take a little while to show up. I've been couging a little (like most people on campus) but it's not a fluid filled cough its more dry and it's very interminent. Anyone have any ideas? I'm a bit of a hypocondriac and I'm really afraid I'm gonna get it too.

My Husband was diagnosed with "walking" pneamonia 10 days ago. He went to Doctor 13 days ago with back pain, fever, Nausea and vomitting, and very dark urine. We figured it was Kidney Stones, which he has on a regular basis. They did Urine test and Dr. said with blood in urine and back pain it must be kidney infection. He gave him a prescription for Bactrin and something for Nausea. Three days later he was still running a 102* fever, so I took him to the ER. They did Blood test, Urine test, Cat scan, and Chest Xray. Dr. said it was "walking" pnuemonia and the blood in urine was from dehydration. He prescribed him the "Zpak", which he finished 5 days ago. Although the fever is gone, his urine is still very dark. His lower back, just below his rib cage, is still hurting him. He is staying nauseated and has vomitted everyday. He is still eating just not as much, says his stomach is just soured. He is not vomitting all day or throwing up every thing he eats, its like he vomits bile a couple times a day. He has no energy and he is sleeping alot more than normal. Has anyone else had these symptoms with "walking" pnuemonia? We don't have insurance so getting him back to the Dr. is a task. The ER Dr. told him it could take up to 14 days to completly get over it so he thinks its just running its corse. Is this normal? or should I start working on getting him back to Dr.?

contagious period for walking pneumonia

how long does is take before the antibiotics kick in and you start feeling better, my friend has been on the medication for about 5 days now and is still experiencing terrible body aches including head aches and pressure in the chest.

I have walking pneumonia right now, and you probably have a more severe case of it. I was given a cough medicine, an antibiotic and a steroid so everything would work fast because my doctor didnt have a medicine that was strong enough, so everything was prescribed to me. I would recommend going to the doctor and telling them it didnt have a great effect, and see if maybe they can get you on a stronger medication?

I like how you say it's really contagious. I was diagnosed and sent to work with 2 respiratory drugs, antibiotic, mucinex, and an inhaler. Next day at work I had to go to medical and get an aerosol nebulizer and a strong asthma pill because I could barely breathe. And was told I'm fine to work again. So not only am I using an inhaler multiple times at work to function but aren't I spreading it to everyone?

I have walking pneumonia right now and what you are describing doesn't sound like it. If you look up the symptoms for walking pneumonia he might have some but most of them are not those of walking pneumonia. I think you should get a second opinion.

I have to disagree with the idea that walking pneumonia isn't treated with antibiotics. I have WP twice in my life and both times was given a script for antibiotics. My father recently had a bout with WP and, because of some new insurance coverage, wasn't covered with oral antibiotics and had to spend time in a nursing facility to receive antibiotics intravenously.
Whether my family is the exception to the rule or not, why would they even put us on antibiotics if it wasn't necessary?

She's right. That's exactly how I felt today, and was just diagnosed with WP.

5 days is the standard Rx of azithromycin (Zithromax,Zpak) to treat community acquired pneumonia. Other antibiotics are sometimes prescribed for longer periods of time since all antibiotics work differently. Rarely are more than 5 days required. If symptoms are not improving by that time a different class of antibiotic may be needed. Acetaminophen noted in the above post is not an antibiotic, it is the generic name for Tylenol, taken for fever or pain. (I'm a doctor just wanting to correct the misinformation above)
