Can I diagnose my self with ADD? I suspect I have some of the symptoms. How did you realize you had ADD problems? I don't have time for a doctor.

But you can’t diagnose yourself with a mental disorder. You need to see a professional; they use something called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
Usually ADD is associated with anxiety, so you might want to work on becoming less anxious if anything

I've been reading about add, sometimes i think i have it. I was not a bad student when i was a kid(in school my mind was never there but i studied at home), i wasn't hyperactive, and i can read a book. Anyway i have this problem of constant anxiety, forgetting things in everyplace, almost everyday i forget something, like glasses, keys(i never say where i put them) ; let burn the food, forget the code number of credit card, sometimes i'm working in a project, and when i have a break and someones asks me what i was doing, i just don´t know what to answer, it's complete blackout , etc. I'm a very impulsive person and i start millions of projects and i don't really feel interest in finishing them. Many times i start something cause i like the fact it's difficult and i don't finish cause i get to anxious to finish it. When i was younger i had this job in a restaurant, many and i mean many times i forgot what it was supposed to take to the client, or even if he payed. Many things that makes me different from a normal person. My grandfather had Alzheimer my older sister had some problems with school, she needed special school and i have a grandmother that was interned in a psychiatric clinic, don't really know why.

I will agree with ishman that you need a professional to diagnose ADD/ADHD for you, but I disagree about ADD/ADHD only being associated with anxiety.....although it may be something related to it, ADD is associated with inattention and impulsivity (ADHD being this except with hyperactivity) if you want more questions on it then just ask me cause this right here is a very broad answer........and to answer your question about how I personally got diagnosed with ADHD....well I got a professional to do it, although my parents used natural treatments rather than medication...glad to help

juanjohnguy I agree with your assessment. I know that it's tempting to self-diagnose with a lot of information available on the internet nowadays but there is a reason why doctors have to go to school for over ten years just to become physicians. There is a lot of specialized training involved and more nuance than just looking symptoms up on the internet. Please let us know how things go for you and if you have gotten help.

true....but its still a disorder that doctors still don't have too much information about, I mean some doctors even diagnose kids as young as 2.... and although we do have some information to make theories about it and its causes, we still don't have sufficient data to do things like medicate them, especially if we don't know what the long term effects are or how a stimulant really effects a human brain, although I do acknowledge that we do have people that specialize in learning about ADHD to help people with it since it is starting to become a common problem

Hi,
juanjhonhuy I'm little interested in these natural treatments that your parents have used. What do you mean by this? If you can give us some more information abut this it would be great. Did they use any herbs?

Well just to remind you these natural treatments will need some time in order to show some improvement, but the effects of the natural methods are very beneficial especially if you weigh the side effects of medication vs no side effects for natural methods. One way that my parents actually found to be very effective in treating my ADHD was just put me in different sports (as simplistic as that may sound) but I know the one thing I loved the most was when I did Tae Kwon Do. It for sure let me let some energy out so that later on I could focus a little better, its like the connection with sleep and paying attention, people who have had little sleep the night before find it harder to pay attention or do things in contrast to a person who has had a good night's sleep. There actually have been studies have proven that meditation can help kids with ADD and ADHD....if your interested in this then here is the link to a good website I found talking about transcendental meditation..... http://adhd-tm.org/ .....There also have been some books about how relaxing out in nature (this being for adults and possibly for children with ADD or ADHD) can help a lot in decreasing your ADD/ADHD, I'm not sure the author of the book but I'm certain that there is a book where a guy (who is also the author) with ADHD finds that the best "cure" for it is to just go out into the forest and just sit in a tree and relax and listen to nature, or just fish. The one "treatment" that I wanted to try was taking fish oil pills in my diet, they are natural supplements and can be found in the vitamins section of a general store and are not medication at all.....the reason why I wanted to try this is because I was looking up cures to ADHD and I came across a person named Daniel Amen. He has seen a lot of people with ADD/ADHD and the one thing that he said that kinda got me curious was how fish oil could help and possibly cure the symptoms of ADD/ADHD...I'm not sure about the mechanics of what fish oil is good for in the brain, but I know that it is good for a certain part, possibly the hypocampus....although I may be wrong....so I would try the fish oil pills....even though I don't have ADHD anymore (since I overcame it with coping mechanisms) I still want to take fish oil pills because they are really good for your brain.....if you have anymore questions then just post back

Hi Juanjohnguy,
How are you planing to take fish oil pills? With every meal or just once a day? I'm not sure how much can you take during the day. But if you thing it will be good for you, then try it. Did you find some side effects on fish oil that you need to watch out?

Hey, its juanjohnguy....I just got your reply and I am actually starting to take the fish oil now (as in I just starting taking them a couple of days ago) I took two 1000mg tablets the first day, but I realized that that is too much especially for the first day...so I'm going down to only one 1000mg pill a day...I have not experienced any bad symptoms...but then again its too early to tell yet for both the improvements and for the side effects...oh and like I said I take one 1000mg pill of the fish oil a day...although it could be different since they come in different dosages...I will keep you updated though..

Hi JuanJohnguy,
I'm very glad that you posted this. It's good that you have started taking fish oil. I'm interested to see your results. Hopefully in improvements not in bad side effects. :-)
It's better to go slow in beginning, let your system adjust to it.
I'll be waiting for your update.
Best of luck.
