I am 23 year old male. Day to day I am going to try an explain how/what you should be doing to make this process as smooth as possible.

Electrocauterization method.

PRE OP

Stop smoking and Drinking 24 to preferably 48 hours at least before surgery. Recovery will be smoother.

DAY 1/of surgery- sleep it off

I recommend eating nothing, doing nothing, but ALWAYS drink your GALLON of water a day; as well as your prescribed meds.

Water is essential through this whole process. There is a diffrence between dehydrated and dry throat, as much as possible you dont want your throat to be dry in anyway anytime. After being dried out, like falling asleep, those next few swigs of water will be pretty painful/uncomfortable. Dehydration is another story, if you get dehydrated to the point where your light headed or sick, this is a grave mistake. Throwing up will probably follow, im not sure about the details as i dont have experience; i can assure you though if you reach this point, you ahve failed. Your tongue, cheeks, gum, will all be swollen and sore but you MUST DRINK if those scabs get dried out, the chances of excess bleeding and pain skyrocket.

DAY 2- you aint seen nothing yet.

These first two days will be the best days of comfortability and pain. The next 7 will be...hell. Everyone has diffrent pain thresholds and deal with pain diffrently. I consider myself leaning toward the higher pain threshold, and its pretty motherflipping painful. Set alarms for each prescribed medication, if you miss your pain meds, you can bet your going to be in a fair amount of pain for 45min, simply because you are used to the medication helping out. Jus stay on top of it and you should have no problem. If your medication is taking care of the pain, call your doctor; they have to help you. If you get questioned on your narcotic use or told you cant receive more medication, dont give up, dont sit there in pain because your doctor is stuborn or whatever. Make an appt, find a diff doctor, but your pain needs to be under control for your sanity sake. DIET-WATER WATER WATER, dont stop until your peeing everyhour. Chicken Broth, Tomato Soup, and other broths with no grainy or fiber textures in there work well. Hot liquids are a NO GO, even what doesent seem too warm in your mouth feels a very temperature on the way down your throat. Always overestimate, let things cool to room temperature. Drinkable Yogurt is great for breakfast. Instant Mash potatoes. Drink everything, dont utensils because of the danger of poking your scabs. Always rinse your throat out after eating, removing any food particles etc.

Day 3-Stay vigilant

Nights are the worst, your throat dries out, drinking water is super annoying and painful after your already dried. Stay on top of those pain meds and be ready for a lot of naps, not sleeping through the night. Pain will increase, keep activity to a minimum still,  exercise will raise your blood pressure and cause some intense blood flow in the throat. Talking should be kept to an absolute minimum. Drink your gallon and dont get risky, you will feel worse before you feel better at this point but you need to becareful just because your feeling better dosent mean those scabs are ready to take the scrape of fried food. POPSICLES POPSICLES, ice cream and other dairy like the drinkable yogurt leave a film or feel a little grainy sometimes. just remember to rinse

Day 4/5- why did i do this to myself?

This should be the your half way point and your probably wondering if death is a better option. A big part of this recovery is staying still and being couped up for 10 days at least. Kind of made me go insane. The pain is madening, especially in the middle of the night. At this point food variety is key, french style eggs is a good one. (boil water and put a steel bowl with scrambled eggs on top). Stick with your broths and yogurt. Remember no Acids, they burn the throat (no orange juice or any citrus, no spicy foods or sauce). YOU WILL GET THOUGH THIS, but dont slack, no reason to go to the doc and get re cauterized because you snuck a french fry and now you cant stop bleeding.

Day 6/7 - Regular scrambled eggs should be good to go, overcooked pastas, overcooked risotto. all do well. Eat slowly, Chew Throughly, Swallow in small portions. When your throat is sore and tight dont stretch it if you dont have to. Drink your gallon, stretch, remain in quiet activity mode.

Day 8-10-Its all downhill from here

If you have been on top of things you should be feeling better, a little more energy. I encourage eating and talking in moderation at this point, get those throat muscles stretched out and active. Blood flow will help healing at this point. I was pretty much off the pain meds at this point, very very little excercise. I am still swollen and sore in places but am able to clear my throat and swallow pretty comfortably.

STAY POSITIVE, having a strong will and be determined. If things arent going as smoothly as mine did, i feel for you, its true misery.
