I had a hymenectomy done a while ago and was very happy with the results for the most part. It's made everything easier, like the fact that I can actually use tampons comfortably. It didn't even hurt that bad, the pain reminded me of how sometimes when you have your period it kind of feels like your uterus is going to drop out of ur vagina. Sitting was a bit uncomfortable at first, but I was back at work in less than a week (I work in a job where I'm sitting most of the day) and was pretty much off the pain meds after two weeks. I think the hardest part was training myself that something can be inserted in there and not expecting pain. My gynecologist actually gave me dilators to use just to help me get the idea that it doesn't have to hurt. Sex was a little harder since I don't have complete control over the other person. But I did have a concern, about a week after the surgery I finally got up the courage to look down there (I was a little scared at first to see it with all the stitches in and everything, I was afraid of what it would look like now) I was a little shocked. It definatly didn't look like it did before. I don't have those "inner lips" anymore, it just looks weird to me. I'm a little self conscious of it honestly. I'm afraid to have anyone see, in the event that it ever comes up. I guess I'm just wondering if this is what everyone looks like after the surgery? Was anyone else surprised the first time they saw it after it had healed? I dunno if I'm just blowing this all out of proportion, I've never been very familiar with the area, I come from a family where we just don't talk about those kind of things so I've really never had any idea of what is "normal" when it comes to that area. I dunno, maybe it doesn't matter, maybe guys don't care what it looks like, I've been with the same guy threw all of this and he doesn't care, but if we break up I'm going to be scared to sleep with anyone else. I guess I'm just hoping that this is normal and I'm not the only one freaked out by this.

I just had a hymenectomy two days ago. Surgery was quick and recovery is going very well. It is too soon to tell whether everything is okay or not, however everything is a lot better than I had expected, pain is minimal, as is blood, although it changes depending on what you do, and only had pain urinating and sitting the first day of surgery. hopefully all continues to go well

Hey, I just went to the GYNO today for the first time, just for a check up. She enbed up discovering that i had a very thick hymen, and told me that the hymenotomy surgery would be best. Im almost sixteen now, and im kind of scared about the recovery period! I've never had surgery, but i definately think im going to get this one! It's really hard for a teenage girl to have this problem ( being forced to use pads) and not be able to be in sports.

I'm nearly positive that I need this surgery; after having many difficulties with tampons, as well as extremely long periods (often smellier than I think is normal), I recently discovered that neither my boyfriend or I can even get a finger inside, and if its managed then its highly uncomfortable (I've only ever been able to use ultra slim tampons, and those were even uncomfortable) I'm planning on seeing my doctor about getting an exam for that area (she's been trying to put it off because I'm still a virgin even though I'm 19), so no worries that I'll be making any rash decisions. I am very curious however as to the cost of the procedure; it's already been asked but no one seems to have answered :-( I only have insurance through my college, and it might not even be covered, so I'll likely be facing the bill myself.

Someone please help me out; information about pricing for a hymenectomy would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi guys, I'm 19 years old, I've been with my Fiancé for about 2 years+ now, we have a long distance relationship since I am living in germany. Now you'd imagine that whenever we actually get to see each others in person that we'd love to have some intercourse - that turned out to be a big problem for us. The worst imageinable pain possible whenever he just TRIED to get in or use his finger on me.

So I decided to see a doctor about it, I got my chek up and in a few minutes it was clear. Half of my hymen was still there and it became very meaty and thick. The tension caused by intercourse on the half hymen tore me apart literally. So I asked what can I do about this?

My doctor told me there are two options, the first was using a special lotion, massaging my hymen with that - thrice a day for 2 weeks before having intercourse again.
or
having it split apart by one cut in an ambulantory anathestic operation.

The doctor advised to first try the lotion, since there are always risks with operations and maybe the lotion could fix it. So I tried that, besides the mess caused on your panties by it smearing all over the place it felt pretty awful going to the restroom thrice a day and dissapear for 10~15 minutes since it has to dry in a little at least. My doc also said to use it as lube, so me and my fiancé tried that and nope, it didnt help at all. The same pain just by trying to get in ;( What a nice vacation in germany for my BF haha

Okay, shortly after he left I went to the doctor again, and asked what the operation would cost me. Lucky for me in germany we have health care and it was completely free, my insurance covers it all. I got an appointment at a local hospital for a check up and some talk.

2 weeks ago I had my first visit at the hospital, I got checked down there, a lot of fumbling and putting pressure on my ouchie spot, and yep it should be fixable by an OP. So one week after I came in for another check up and the anasthetic talk to follow. I got some papers that I had to read about the risks of this operation, possible nerve damage, infections the usual stuff you can imagine of operations on a spot like this. So, I talked to a very charismatic doctor that cleared me up on this, its very rare that nerves are cut down there, since most nerves are located in the clitoris wich is nowhere near my hymen so that was good to hear ;P Then I had to give a bunch of info due to the anasthetic that I was going to get for my OP.

3 days later, I had to stay sober 12 hours before the appointment, that ment no food alcohol drinks or cigarettes from sunday mindnight.

I'm not gonna tell you that it boosts your self esteem when you get put into an operation bed where your legs are tied up into the air and all you wear is a warm blanket and a hair net. The operation is a very short one, it takes about 15~20 minutes to do the cut, the anasthetic takes a bit longer, I got it once I was in a clean OP room and the doctor was ready to go. You can read a very long blog entry about that day here: I hope it helps others go through this.

Today I'm writing this, one day after the OP, I'm feeling pretty weak, caused by the anasthetic, peeing hurts every now and then, it bleeds occasionally but it DOES NOT HURT LIKE YOU WOULD IMAGINE IT DOES!

Girls listen, no matter how old you are, get rid of your meaty ass hymen if it hurts you when you have intercourse - not only for yourself so you can enjoy your intimate time again but also so your partner stays happy. Dear god I am so thankful my boyfriend stood with me for 6 months without sex, lol I'm glad he didnt ditch me for some other chick that puts out but he stood by my side and supported me.

I hope someone with this stupid condition (a joke form mother nature lol) reads this and gets some courage to do it.

Again please check out my blog for more info on this

My daughter had one today. The experience leading up to what was wrong was horrible. Evidently she's been having a period for about a year but the blood was unable to leave her body and gradually collecting behind the hymen. This week she complained of feeling constipated and she definitely looked extremely bloated. Nothing worked for the constipation so took her to a wonderful walk in clinic associated with a major med clinic in our area. They did a rectal exam and found nothing but some pressure. THe referred her to xray which showed nothing. After emptying her bladder the dr. did another rectal exam and found the pressure was still there. Next was a CT scan which indicated immediately what the problem was. They did the procedure today and removed about 2.5 liters of fluid ( blood). She's a skinny girl but this week her tummy looked 4-5 months pregnant and now she's back down to beyond flat bellied and feeling great outside of being a little sore. She was given no restrictions and the bleeding is minimal to say the least. She is aged 13.

Well this was my journey. I just recently had my hymenectomy 2 weeks ago. It isnt a horrible experience at all. If your like me and you cant wear tampons and you want to have sex but you just cant i recommend seeing a doctor and discussing this with her. Sooner the better because my first gynecologist visit was September 18th and im 23. Since i was 18 i was too scared to tell anyone what was wrong and i am now 23 and still waiting to see if i can have sex but i am optimistic and determined to be like everyone else! I first went to the doctor and she said that i had probably developed vaginismis i have had no history of abuse but at 18 when i tired to have sex it was emotionally damaging and painful like you wouldn't believe. I scheduled for my hymenectomy in September and had the surgery in October. I was really nervous but my mom who is a doctor was there with me (seriously helps when your mom is there, i don't care how old you are, I'm 23 and i wanted my mommy) I was told to be there at 6 and they signed me in and i signed what seemed like a million papers. After that i was taken back (alone) with the nurse in another room and I had to take off all of my clothes and put on what they ask you to wear which is a goofy cap and a sheet lol It was a little unusual but i thought what the heck this isn't the time to feel embarrassed. The nurse came back in and asked me questions about drinking, drugs and they made sure i hadn't eaten or had any water after 12 the night before which is for your benefit so that you don't throw up. After all the questions i got in my little bed and the nurse tried twice to give me the IV. I don't want you to be scared but the IV does hurt but if you just close your eyes and just bare down it will be over, they let my mom come in for a little bit and the anesthesiologist came by and talked to me about what he was giving me. (they ask you a million times your name date of birth and procedure, try not to get annoyed they are just making sure you are aware but trust me its a bunch) My mom is a doctor so they talked about doctor stuff until he noticed i was nervous and then gave me something to calm down which felt good. I wasn't really that scared but Ive never had any surgery before and so as you can imagine it was a little different and my heart rate was going crazy. After the medicine, My mom and the Gynecologist that was doing the procedure started to talk (I might mention my mom and my doctor doing the procedure have known eachother 30 years ) . I had arrived at 6 and it was now 730 and time for me to go. So i said good bye to my mom and that i loved her because i think its always good to do that and they took me to the operation room which was so cold! I had to transfer to a bed and all these people are working together to get you in one spot. Finally after being positioned perfectly the doctor came in and said well its time and she held my hand and i remember looking up at these bright lights and saying "my friend has gone under before and its just like drifting away" and the doctor said well just drift away and i remember drifting away and laughing because of how she said it. 1 HOUR LATER, i woke up in the post operation room with a nurse at the end of my bed and something in my mouth which i now know it was to help me breathe and man did i have to pee too. The first thing i wanted was water. The nurse wouldn't give me water but she brought me a soda. I remember touching down there and seeing blood, make sure you bring a pad with you like i did because there will be bleeding and i brought white panties and a pad and if i didn't have that pad my white panties would have been ruined. Needless to say i went home and they give you prescriptions of loratab and then 2 creams to rub on your vagina twice a day for 2 weeks. For a week i bleed like a light period but there was really no pain. I was giving numbing gell for when you go to the bath room but i actually didn't have to go to the bathroom for a week so i didnt have any problems i was just kind of scared to even pee because i didnt want to mess up anything but that was irrational thinking lol After all is said and done i am excited about going to see the doctor for my check up but honestly if you are considering this procedure. DO IT! its not painful and yes its a little scary and the IV hurts but you can do it. No longer should i endure having to go without sex or wearing tampons. The recovery is a piece of cake and the loratabs make it so you feel better. Try to not walk around the first day but on the second just get on your feet for a little. Give yourself at least 4 days before you really do anything. And remember that when you see things come out of you when you pee, don't be alarmed. Its normal. The doctor will call you the next day or so to make sure your doing fine. Remember to always ask questions no matter how personal they are. They are doctors for a reason and if you have discomfort anywhere be vocal about it. My journey is still going and i'll let you know how the post check up goes in a week. Was if hard for anyone to have sex after the surgery? I am so looking forward to it!
Anyway, lots of love !

I had a hymenectomy when I was 11 years old, I originally went to the doctor because I was having horrible stomach pains and cramping for almost 6 months. My mother thought I was just going through puberty and would be getting my period soon. Eventually it got to the point where every month like clockwork I was in the nurses office complaining of a stomach ache. When I went to my pediatrician he ran a bunch of tests and then asked my mother if he could perform a vaginal exam. Which was not fun at all for me since I was 11 and it was the first time anyone had gone down there since I was in diapers. After the exam my doctor sent me for an ultrasound because my hymen was completly blocking anything from coming out. At that point I had been having my period for a year. They rushed me into surgery because I was so young that they were worried about all of the back up in me. I went into surgery later that day. And it went very well. It was quick and painless and the doctors were great. I did stay two days in the hospital for observation so they could track the amount of bleeding. I bled for about three weeks and it was heavy they noted this to the fact that I had so much backed up in me from the past year. Since then I have had regular periods every 28 days like clockwork, athough my period is still heavy with cramping and lasts for 7 days. Birth control now has helped me lessen the length of my period to about 5 days. I also have no problems with tampons although at first I didnt like them and thought they were uncomfortable. But once I got older I had no problem with them. The surgery was a success and I am very happy with the results. My doctor later informed me when I was about 16 that out of all his years in his practice I was the only patient that had this procedure done. My doctor was amazing, he was my pediatrician from when I was born and I didnt leave his practice till I was too old to go there anymore when I was 21. I am 22 years old now and would give anything to still be able to go to my pediatrician he's amazing. I havent had any problems since, except for that annoying period I always get.

My Wife had an Hymenectomy about 3 weeks ago. The surgery itself is not bad. Its an outpatient surgery, meaning you will be done the same day. I just got a bill from the hospital for $11,000. I'm shocked. :-( The doctor told us it would cost about $3000 max. And even now sex is not possible cause its still tight. Don't know what to do. :-(

I had to go to the gynecologist at 12 years old because of my Hymen issues. I am older now and I have to undergo a hymenectomy and I am very scared because I heard that they strapped you down to a cold table, fully naked, and did not use anesthetic and you were awake the entire time. I also heard that the gynecologic surgeon just gave you a series of shots to numb you down there which were excruciatingly painful. I am very worried that being strapped down will be uncomfortable and the pain of the vaginal shots will be unbearable. I do not have a choice in the surgery, I must have the procedure done. My main questions are: will I be strapped to the operating table? Will I be awake? Will it hurt badly?

Thank you and PLEASE respond.

Have you read the previous three posts?
What country are you in?

Who's been telling you all those stories, your friends?
Some friends :-S

They sound like the kind of tales we got about our first physical in the Army. The square needle they were going to stick in our left nuts and other things like scraping a layer of skin off the head of our penises o.O to test for VD.

Don't believe all the stories you hear.

I had my hymenectomy a few weeks ago. I have never been able to use tampons, so I was on birth control so I could have some control. My doctor put me on a birth control where I would only get my period 4 times a year because I am 17 and it is very embarassing to wear pads, and it smells bad. Anyways I finally scheduled an appointment with the surgeon and at the appointment she tried to take a look. She barely even touched me down there and I became teary-eyed. So she schedulded me for not a surgery, because she wasn't sure if a hymenectomy was what I needed. She called it a "exam under anesthesia". I was very worried what was going to happen because I wasn't sure what she was going to do. I was very nervous as well because I am very scared of needles.

I went into the hospital about two hours before my "exam" to get prepped and such. I was called in almost right away so I didn't have much time to think about what was going on and get scared. I changed into a gown and the nurse was very nice and asked me a bunch of questions. She also had to give me a warm blanket because my hands were so cold. She warmed them up, and numbed one hand and then put the ivy in. I was so happy that she numbed me first! It was such a relief. Then my doctor came in to go over what was going on and to check in on me. I also met the anesthesiologist and he asked me if I was nervous and he could tell just by looking at me and he told me he had meds for that. He also asked me multiple questions. Then another nurse showed up and gave me a hair net thing and she wheeled me into this large, cold room. There was another nurse in there who welcomed me and was very nice. All of the nurses wanted to make sure to welcome me. It was very nice. I then had to move onto another bed and they put more blankets on me cause it was freezing in there. Then the anesthesiologist came in and talked to me and told me I might feel some stinging in my arm (meaning he was putting the meds in to make me sleep). I felt nothing and was out before I knew it. I woke up in the room I was first in to my mom rubbing my arm. I woke up so confused and my first question was "what'd they do?". My mom told me they did a hymenectomy. I then felt some bleeding down there and told the nurse and she brought a pad awhile after. I felt bad because I got some blood on the bed. I guess it wasn't my fault! I felt kind of weak so I just laid there for awhile and finally ate. I was starving. Then I peed and was off. It was sort of painful to sit, so I laid on the couch for the next day and a half. I took baths 3 times a day and I only had minor bleeding for a couple days.

I just had my checkup and my doctor could put a finger in! It was a little painful because I was uncomforable. She then told me that I would need to start using dilators so I wouldn't need another surgery, so I will be starting to use those next week when they arrive. I hope all of this information helps! I couldn't find much online.

I had absolutely no problems with mine.  I'm 18, and I had a hymenectomy so I could wear tampons more easily.  Because it was done in the hospital, the pre-surgery process seemed kind of serious compared to the quick and simple procedure.  (I had to have an IV put in, put a hair net thing on, etc.)  The actual surgery was so simple.  They gave me something to make me a little loopy before wheeling me to the surgery room.  Then they had me scoot off the gurney and onto the table.  I remember laying there and putting a mask over my face to put me to sleep.  Before I knew it, I woke up in recovery.  I felt a little groggy, but I had no pain.  I had gauze underwear and a pad on to soak up the minimal blood that there was.  Within five minutes, I was walking with the nurse to another room to get changed and leave the hospital.  Honestly, getting my wisdom teeth out was way worse than this surgery.  The day after I went to a baseball game on only two Advil.  I could have even skipped the medicine and felt fine.  It wasn't bad at all, and now I'll be able to wear tampons.  I'm so happy and relieved that I did this!
