I had a hymenectomy a little over a week ago and I HIGHLY recommend having the procedure if that it what your doctor thinks is best. My story: I started my period when I was 12, and I really wanted to wear tampons. I think when my 2nd or 3rd period came along I attempted to use a "light" tampon and it went in just fine, with no pain at all, and I could not feel it while it was in there. So, I wore a few tampons without issues, and then I skipped my period for 4 months. Obviously being a 12 hear old virgin, I knew it was not a pregnancy, so I just went along and started my period again a few months later. However, this time, I could not get tampons to go in anymore. It was like there was a painful wall keeping the tampon from going in. It was very frustrating, since I was once able to use tampons. So, for the next several years, I would randomly every few months try to use a tampon again. Of course, it never worked and that same horrible pain was always there. I finally went to the gynecologist right before I turned 19. Apparently, I was able to use the "light" tampons because they are smaller and I was able to fit them into my vaginal opening without running into my hymen. However, the other times that I experience pain were because I was running right into my hymen. So, my nurse practitioner and my gynecologist hoth recommended a hymenectomy. The surgery was simple, less than an hour. I was emotional when I woke up and cried really easily (I'm emotional normally anyways). I had about a 1 or 2 pain on a scale of 1-10, so my nurse gave me medicine. I used a pad for the bleeding, which was very minimal. Also, I went and ate IHOP after surgery and ate a ton of food if that tells you how easy the surgery was. Even more than that, my mom and I went shopping at a few stores after that and I did fine. My main discomfort was walking and sitting in certain positions, but by about a week and a half, I had no more soreness. I definitely recommend this to anyone who needs it done. You are not the only one with this issue, and it is an easy fix. :)

I had almost the exact same experience! Expect I don't have a mom at home so I was pretty lost there for a while

Hi, I have been married for a year but still we couldn't penetrate my self as I feel really uncomfortable during the intercourse. I'm planning to go for a hymenectomy. How is the surgery? How long does it take? And did u get General anaesthesia prior to that surgery?

I had the exact same experience. My first OB/GYN visit led to a hysterectomy recommendation. I actually had it today and it really wasn't bad. I'm home recovering on day one. There has been some burning when I pee, and some bleeding (much, much leads than a normal period), but I haven't had any pain at all. My doctor recommended Tylenol or Motrin if I needed to, but it has been a good thing so far. I don't remember the procedure AT ALL. I think I have more discomfort from the oxygen they used in the OR (just a sore throat. But some cough losenges) Being able to use tampons will be a lot more comfortable and convenient if you ever take up sports or swimmimg. Lugging around giant pads so the time can be a pain in the neck.

I’m 18 and last month I found out I had a septate hymen and last week I had my hymenectomy! I was a bit worried at first because it was the first time I had had any type of surgery or stitches, but looking back on it now I realize that I really had no reason to worry! I was given a combination of light sedation and painkillers mostly to calm me down and so that I won’t feel the local anesthesia that the doctor injected in my vagina. Most of the time no one but ge doctors and nurses will be in the room with you, but my doctor let my mom stay with me as long as she sat out of the way, so that was nice. I was completely awake and coherent throughout the whole procedure and was able to tell the doctor when I felt the first local anesthesia injection so they upped my painkillers through the IV. The only evidence that I had that I was on any meds (other than the fact that I couldn’t feel anything down there), was that the ceiling started looking as if it was slightly shaking, sort of like when you go slightly cross-eyes. The procedure itself was down within 10-15 minutes and they kept me in the room for about an hour more to let the sedation wear off. I was on my phone with a clear mind literally ten minutes after the doctor left and I was able to hold a full conversations with my mom pretty quickly. By the time it came for me to leave, I wasn’t at all dizzy standing up, I was able to dress myself, and I felt absolutely no pain down there. It truly felt like they did no work down there even though I knew they did. I had no bleeding and a thin panty liner was enough on the first day immediately after the surgery to keep my underwear clean. It’s been four days since he hymenectomy and I haven’t felt any pain or bled at all. The only thing that reminds me that I had the surgery at all is the fact that I have to dab instead of wipe when I go to the bathroom (because of the stitches). I am extremely happy that I chose to have this surgery and I highly suggest anyone who has hymen problems and who has been advised by their doctor to get this surgery as well. It will make your life hundred times easier (especially when it comes to sex and periods)!!

Thank you for this. My teenage daughter needs to have the procedure and the information on the internet is incredibly limited. She is a very active athlete and I'm worried about how limited her exercise will have to be after the surgery. Do you know if that is 2 weeks of limited sports?

I am so sorry. I’m fifteen too and they discovered mine during an iud insertion surgery, they had no objections to removing it and never mentioned anything about waiting until sex to my guardians (I was already under so my consent didn’t matter), they just wanted it out so it didn’t cause damage to my kidneys or bowels; which unfortunately it already did. I really hope you can find another hospital or doctor who will give you the procedure, it helped me a lot and I hope you don’t have to suffer anymore.

I dont know much about the surgery as mine was an emergency procedure, but if your daughter is healthy she shouldn’t have much trouble. I have endometriosis and can’t take Tylenol, and also had an iud put in at the same time, so my recovery took a couple weeks but it was overly not that terrible. But I was not given estrogen cream or pain meds for whatever reason so that most likely attributed to it. I would definitely recommend asking for the aftercare steps since my parents were not told them and I wasn’t either, I have no idea why they didn’t tell us anything.

I had the same experience. I was not given estrogen cream so I had some bad pain and my mom told me to check my vagina in the mirror to make sure it was okay, as we had no idea you were even supposed to get estrogen cream, and when I saw it I panicked. It was so terrifying because there was a whole anatomy that wasn’t there before and everything looked different and weird, I wish I had prepared my self better for that, I know that it would look different but I had no idea that any of that was under there.

I hope you got your surgery done and realized it's under general anesthesia and you are not awake during the procedure.
