I’m 17 years old and had my hymenectomy yesterday. I had never been able to use a tampon and, after extensive research, decided that i more than likely had an imperforate hymen. A trip to the gyno quickly confirmed my assumption, following a surgery about 9 months later. The worst part of the actual surgery was the anxiety leading up to it, and the IV because I despise needles. The drugs they gave me made me feel super out of it and nauseous. If Im being completely honest, the pain was MUCH worse than i anticipated. I woke up bawling my eyes out at midnight because of how excruciating the pain was. Peeing hurts so bad so i’m spraying warm water down there as I pee to try and reduce the acid on the open wounds. I have not made a bowel movement yet and am terrified for the pain and the idea of potentially ripping stitches. While I am in terrible pain, I feel as though it is worth it because I will finally be able to wear tampons and partake in intercourse as I get older. I’ve been on very strong painkillers and am currently waiting on subsidiation of pain so I can head back to work. Best of luck to anyone else going through this, and if anyone has advice on how to pass bowel movements, it would be greatly appreciated

Hi All,

I just had my hymen removed 3 weeks back. I had visited the gynac since I found trying to insert tampon or having intercourse painful. She told me I have a thick and rigid hymen and advises surgery. I was not in too much pain post surgery but I had been asked to book a follow up appointment after 5 days. When I went, the gynac examined me and she inserted her two fingers and it was equally if not more painful. She told me that by now it should be painless since she has removed the hymen and that I am making it painful by tensing up and also added that I need to lose weight. Not sure how weight loss was relevant here but I was fighting tears and couldn’t bring myself to ask. Does this mean the surgery was of no use? How soon should I try to insert a tampon? I just started my cycle and want to give it a try but at this point I am too worked up. It’s been a year and four months since I married and we haven’t been able to penetrate yet. My husband has been very patient but I feel like it’s never going to happen.. I have been told to have another follow up appointment after a month but I don’t feel like going in. Any positive stories would be very welcome.
