I had a hymenectomy exactly a month ago and it was not nearly as bad as I expected. I was mostly nervous for the anesthesia (I’m terrified of needles and IV’s!) and this was my first surgery. I was lucky and was able to schedule the surgery a week after my exam confirming that I needed one. Backtracking, I was not at all happy when my gynecologist said I needed one. I went in after the 6th time my boyfriend and I attempted to have sex. I had a bad feeling that something was wrong, but I admit I had never heard of a hymenectomy. I just assumed they always broke once you had sex! Attempting to have sex left me in excruciating pain and heartbroken that it didn’t work. When my doctor said I would need to have it removed, I waved it off assuming there would be another option. I was wrong and she said I would never be able to have sex if I did not have the surgery done, since there were extra layers of tissue. During the exam, she briefly prodded me with a lubricated q-tip, but stopped when I expressed how much pain I was in. She said there was a way to find out what kind of hymen you have, but that it wasn’t necessary since it would only cause more discomfort and wouldn’t affect the procedure all that much knowing beforehand. I was extremely nervous and thank God I was able to schedule an operation so quickly. The nurses at the surgery center were extremely nice and made sure I was comfortable. The worse part for me was the IV. By the time they walked me over to the operating room and put my legs up on the table, I was out like a light. I woke up 30 minutes later in a recovery bed (how the hell did I get there?) and was extremely groggy and out of it while coming off of the anesthesia. When asked what level of pain I was in, I said a 4. I think it escalated to a 5 ½ once I was more aware of it, but it was manageable. Painful, but manageable. I took Vicadin for a day and then went off of it. My doctor recommended taking three Advils when not taking Vicadin, but they didn’t help at all. I would say the pain had gone down to a 3 the day after the surgery, and then slowly dissipated over the course of the next two weeks. The worst feeling I experienced was the new sensation in my vagina due to the stiches. You know when you have your period and you stand up and there’s that waterfall feeling? It kind of felt like that but all the time for the first week. I did not encounter any complications during my recovery except going to the bathroom was very challenging. Peeing was scary at first, as I didn’t know how much it would hurt. I waited as long as possible after the surgery to pee, but when I did I can honestly say it just felt weird, not painful. It was that same waterfall effect. Pooping was much more of a challenge. I tore some of my stiches the first time I pooped, which made it feel as if some of the healing had been undone. I ended up taking a stool softener and laxative to help with this problem, and pooping was never an issue again. However, there was still that damn waterfall effect! No way around it. It is also important to remember that Vicadin can cause constipation, which is why I went off of it after day one. Looking back, I probably should have taken a stool softener before the surgery. That is my biggest regret. The internal stiches dissolved, but the external stiches (have your doctor explain it to you) are still in a month later. Sometimes I’ll look down and there will be a small piece of thread, which means a stich came out. I’m not sure why it has taken so long for them to come out, as I expected them to all be out by the end of the 2-week recovery period. During my follow-up appointment exactly two weeks after the procedure, by doctor said everything looked “perfect” but that I still had some stiches in. My boyfriend and I attempted to have sex three weeks after the procedure, but it turns out there were still some stiches in which made it painful for me and him. However, I do not regret the surgery at all. Regardless of whether or not I wanted to have it done now so that I could engage in sex, I would have eventually needed to have it done, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to have any babies! If you’re hesitant about having a hymenectomy, don’t be. I’m a very nervous person and even I didn’t flee from the operating room. A month later, I am in absolutely no pain and it’s hard to believe I ever had an operation down there.

I just had a hymenectomy yesterday. I am 15 years old. I had no pain whatsoever even without medication. I can run, sit, etc. all without pain. I have always had to use pads even in sports and it was very difficult and I'm so glad it's over. anyone I tried to talk to (even my mother) thought I was crazy that I "couldn't" use a tampon and it made me feel very insecure. they all thought I was just scared. I always felt abnormal and like an alien because I thought I was the only girl with a septate hymen. I have not had sex yet but I am a lot more comfortable about it knowing that having my hymen removed will make it hurt a LITTLE bit less. I do not regret getting the surgery at all. Don't ever feel like you're alone because believe it or not this does happen to a lot of people. Best of luck for everyone receiving this surgery in the future. I won't ever look back

Ditto! That surgery made a huge difference to my health and I took great pleasure in going back with the results to the GP who'd diagnosed me as a hypochondriac. :)

I have an imperforate hymen; I am a fifteen year old and they said they would not proceed with a hymenectomy procedure until I wanted to become sexually active because it would have to be kept open with sex toys or penetrative sex. So I do not recommend requesting this procedure in your Two year old daughter as they will shoot it down. I have Hematometra which is a medical condition that causes menstrual blood to pool in the uterus. You may have to watch out for this in your daughter as she gets older as I am hospitalised every time I get my period because it can't leave my body it causes sepsis and I get extremely sick. Best of luck for your daughter.

I had the hymenectomy surgery yesterday. I am 34 years old. I have been able to use tampons but I always had to be very careful when inserting them and the cord could cause pain while wearing them. Thus I almost always used pads. I couldn't use the menstrual cups. Exams were painful, and I was able to successfully have only one pap smear in my life. When I attempted sex it never worked - it was too painful. I honestly think it's obscene that I went to so many OBGYN's and only now did I find one (through research) that was able to correctly diagnose me and get me into surgery.

The procedure itself was easy. I arrived at the surgery center and was immediately placed in a warm chair. They had special gowns that pumped warm air under the gown and of course warm blankets. The drugs made me feel good and kept me from pain. I never felt exposed or weird.

For the past day there has been a lot of bleeding. I have one stitch. I slouch all the time like another poster because I don't want to apply pressure to that area. I waddle when I walk to avoid friction. The pain/discomfort is similar to when I was using a tampon and the cord rubbed against the side of my hymen. If I keep this Curad Silver ointment on their then I feel better. I don't have pain that required pain medication however.

If you have pain down their please find doctors who specialize in vaginismus, vulvodynia and other causes of pain.

Well I'm 15 and having to go through this now, I'm very worried and stuff but I think it would be a better idea to sort this out at a young age as I've been suffering and it has affected my life and it can be life threatening because of your kidneys and it can cause a horrible infection inside your womb, it would also be better at a young age becuz she wouldn't worry so much and she could feel embarrassed about it no teen should go through this no one should really.
