I can't stop chewing on ice. I chew ice 24/7. I start shivering and will be freezing cold but, I can't put my cup of ice down. My daughter thinks this might be some kind of deficiency. I'm 44 years old, and I have been crunching ice one cup after the other, all day long for the past five years. Can someone please tell me if this is a problem?

My mother experienced this not too long ago. She couldn't stop chewing ice or eating romaine lettuce. She was addicted to this for two years until the doctor finally figured out what was going on. Chewing ice is a sign of having an insufficient amount of iron in your body. You are most likely anemic. It's a good idea to go to the doctor and get a blood test. My mother now takes three iron pills a day. You might not need that much, but that is what she was recommended. According to my mother, the pill known as FEOSOL is more easily absorbed. It is a carbonyl iron pill (Over The Counter) and it can be found at Shopco or your local pharmacy for about $10 a bottle. Hope that helps!
