My father has diagnosed for cryoglobulinemia few months ago. Not so long time ago I’ve heard for cryofiltration. We are not so much into the medicine so this is very new for us. We don’t know a lot about his disease, especially about new medications. We would like to hear more about cryoglobulinemia and medications for therapy.

Cryoglobulinemia indicates the presence of cryoglobulins in the blood. Those are abnormal forms of protein molecules. At cold temperatures they precipitate and redissolve at normal body temperature. Symptoms are impaired circulation in small blood vessels when the person is exposed to cold, so skin got color changes, extremities are damaged, skin is bleeding and other problems. Cryofiltration has proven extremely effective in ameliorating the complications resulted by cryoglobulinemia such as organ damage and skin ulcers. Cryofiltration is a simple addition to plasmapharesis. Fist patien’t plasma is separated from the body cells and then is chilled in a refrigerated chamber until the cryoglobulins precipitate out of the plasma. Filtrated plasma is warmed, recombinated with blood cells and returned into the patient’s vein. A major medical equipment company finally decided to market cryofiltration, approved from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It should be generally available since 1999.
