I am going to get my Mirena removed in 4 days and I am soooooooo happy that I've made this decision! I had it for 8 months now and finally realized that it is the big problem and causes my weight gain. Somebody wrote here that all you have to do in order not to gain weight is stay away from pizza and fast food and excersize .. ok, let me tell you... it's BS. I've been on South Beach diet for over a year now. in the beggining i lost about 20 lb, kept it off withough any ANY problem.. nice and easy.. I play competitive vball 2 times a week, 3 times a week I do bootcamp training, and in between i do weights at home.. sounds like enough excersise? But my weight is going up!! and yes, it's all around the lower abdomen.. it's crazy! and it's very discouradging! So, I can't waint to get that evil thing removed and get my weight back to normal.. Will keep you posted ;-))

Before I had the Mirena IUD, I worked out roughly 3-5 times a week. I was already calorie counting, and maintaining a healthy diet. (I usually drink only water, and 100% juices...no carbonation or even caffeine). I had been doing this over a year, and was hovering around 133 lbs and size 9/10 pants

After I had the Mirena put in, I shot up to 145 lbs and 11/13 pants. So in return, I watched calories very closely, and began working out twice a day (I promise....I'm not just saying that to be a martyer), 4-5 times a week. (Sometimes 6) And I kept my good eating habits, including eating small meals frequently throughout the day to keep up the metabolism.

To top it off, I even tried out a metabolic enhancer at the same time because working out and diet simply weren't cutting it. Nothing....nothing at all!!! A few months later, I'm still the same weight, same size, and frankly getting burned out on so much diet and exercise.

I am posting this because I am seeing a lot of people saying "diet and exercise" will fix the issue. I think I took my situation a bit extreme, but I think it is safe to say that diet and exercise is not the solution.

But I would like to know if anyone WAS able to successfully able to lose weight with the Mirena, and if so, what is the regimen you took? I'm not scared of exercise or diet....so bring it on. :-)

Hi,
I am scheduled for my 2nd Mirena in a month's time. When I had it 5 yrs ago, I had a full time job and never exercised. I am not sure how much I gained but I can say I always blamed my slow metabolism and unhealthy lifestyle for the muffin tops, not the Mirena. I have always been on the chubby side so my weight didn't really matter to me until I left my job last yr to be a SAHM. I dread being a SAHM, the psychological effect of having to look my best each time my husband comes home became the focus of my weight loss. That was my 4th yr on Mirena and I was (I think) 145 lbs, 5'2 and wore a size 8/10 jeans. I started on treadmill, elliptical, and off to running. Believe me, the weight drop wasn't that fast if you base it from the HOURS I spend working out however, I preferred to still eat the sinful stuff and burn them rather than deprive myself and binge later on. It has to be a compromise if you love food :-) A year later, I am down to sizde 0/2 and xxs. I went beyond my target jeans as well. My husband said to me that I never looked as good when we were dating and he is scared to have the Mirena removed as I might even look more lean and sexier (and he might get me preggo again!) I knew my husband thinks the Mirena is to blame for the excess weight but personally, I think it is my lifestyle back then. I was a career woman trying to be ahead of the rat race...there was a study that fat sticks more when women are stressed...so I try to not sweat on the small stuff now. I always tell myself, "Yeah I don't have a job, everything is tight---except for my jeans! :-)" I still have about 5 lbs to lose (I am now at 118-120) and a lot of toning to do but I am not rushing. My current running routine helped a lot and I am sticking to it 5K, 3x a week. It also helps to weigh yourself daily---yes daily, so you can observe the fluctuations in your weight. I will have my 2nd Mirena and I hope having it for another 5 yrs will be as smooth as the first one.

OMG! I have had the mirena for 2 years now and I have had this problem with losing weight also. I have also taken the phentermine pills and they are not working. I took the phentermine pills about 3 years ago before I got pregnant and I lost 15pds in 2weeks. The mirena has got to be my problem for not losing any weight.

Can anyone let me know what happened after they took it out? or did any of you have it taken out? I have had the same experiences so far, but have only had the mirena for about 2 months. im trying to decide if i have given it enough time for my body to get used to it. I use to be a size 2, 5'4, 112 lbs. Now ive got a belly that feels like an inflated tire; bloated, fat, and crappy. I'm always bitter and in a bad mood because of my weight. Now im a size 4 in pants and i can tell its ONLY in my abdomin/lower belly. I have stayed at a constant 120 lbs, but feel like i look horrible. My hubby has noticed as well. Trying to decide if i should have it taken out and what happens after i have it taken out? Length of time? Symptoms? Gradual Progression after taking it out? or will my body gradually get back to normal by leaving it in?: ie. bloating gone after my body gets use to this. UGH.. please help!!

good lord am i glad i ran across this......I had the mirena put in 2 years ago, since i have had TONS of problems i had NEVER had before. I am 32 years old and have had a history of weight gain/loss. I was 236 pounds in high school and got down to 155 - 2 months later i was pregnant! With lots of diet and exercise i had only jumped to 185 after giving birth. Then there was Mirena, the commercial, i figured since my insurance would cover it in full why not? Since I have developed depression, anxiety, hair loss, acne, and a steady weight gain. I have been on 3 different kinds of birth control before and never had any problems. So i have jumped to 195 pounds, OMFG NO, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE when i'm doing 3 times the dieting and exercising than i had done before to lose almost 100 pounds.
So now comes all the doctors, tests, 1,000's of dollars worth, nutritionists, endocrinologists, weight watchers, jenny craig, nutrisystem, curves, cardinal, HCG hormone shots, u name it - nothing. So now i was approved for the lapband surgery, ok let's give it a try, now i'm post 4 months lapband and i am at 213, ru serious???? WHAT!!!! How is that possible? So now i'm at the maximum fill and have become to get malnutritioned because of the combo of not eating and exercise. So they unfilled it a bit and now put me on phentermine to control cravings, ok, excellent, down 5 pounds in 2 weeks, FINALLY something is working!!! NOPE, the last 3 days 4 pounds back, WHAT HOW i haven't done anything different, so I am scheduled to get the mirena out Monday the 28th even though my gyne disagrees with me, we shall see!!!!!!!!!!!! >;)

son of a %^#%, yah of course they couldn't find it nor get it out so now i am scheduled next week to be put under general anestisia to get it out!!! My gyne of course said he believes all my problems are due to depression, HELLO i was NOT depressed until 5 months after i got this damn thing and i got depressed because of my sudden weight gain, mood swings, fatique, and major hair loss! he asked me about what other form of birth control i plan on using and i told him well probably condoms seeing as that i only have sex once every three months because i dont have a SEX DRIVE ANYMORE!!!!! You could give me a box of the best vibrators with a tube of lube and i'd rather watch paint dry, WTF. ARGH NEVER AGAIN!

I have had the Mirena for 2 years and have hung at the same weight, 168. Last year I exercised and dieted like mad and was able to budge it down to 163. Eventually it slide back to 168 again when I eased off the exercise. I have been doing SLim in 6 and Weight Watchers for three weeks now, and despite a 2 pound lose in the seccond week, I am now up to 169. I want to cry! I have worked so hard and been so diligent with eating clean and healthy and I feel like a whale. I don't get my period, just a Spot that lasts for a day. It isn't every 4 weeks either. This last time it came in 3 weeks, then I can go for 2 monthes with nothing. Also my PMS is out of control. I feel like a mean b***h and am so annoyed at everything. My doctor told me that it has nothing to do with PMS, and that is just the way I would be without it. She then gave me a prescription for a diurectic! I think I am going to get it removed, just scared because I read some horror stories about month long bleeding afterward.
