Hello! I had my Mirena IUD inserted back in March of 09, and I gained about 30-40 LBS after it's insertion, however I think it has nothing to do with the IUD as at the same time my job became incredibly stressful (causing me shingles... I am 24), I was traveling a lot for work, I was CONSIDERABLY less active, and I ate like hell.
I did not have the IUD removed, I quit my job, and started eating right and exercising. I have lost 25 lbs since March of this year and am still going strong. I used to want to blame my IUD too, but I really feel like, at least for me, it is basically just an excuse.

I had Mirena inserted in Nov. 2009 after my 2nd baby. At the time I was about 10lbs above my "normal" 130 weight. I'm 27yrs old, am
5' 6'' and have pretty much always weighed around 130lbs (give or take +/- 5). I will be honest, I do not exercise and never really have, but in the past if I ever wanted to loose a pound or to I would just cut back on junk and that would work. And when I say in the past I do not mean when I was a teen but in the recent past. I know that as you age your metabolism slows and it might be harder to loose weight, but I think that at 27 I am still young and should have no problem loosing weight if I eat healthy. Well for the past couple of months I've cut back drastically on junk and I have not shed a pound. In fact I constantly feel bloated and just realized I've gained another 3lbs. I feel like every day I'm cutting back more and more calories just to avoid gaining weight. I also feel very tired, with no energy, and am just overall "down". I'm contemplating having the Mirena removed. However the security of knowing I can not get pregnant (I've gotten pregnant using a condom twice) is what keeps me from removing it. Don't know what to do...

I had the Mirena IUD inserted in October, 2009. So at this point it's been nearly 8 months. I've gone from 115lbs to 135lbs. I was actually 110 last August, 2009 (summer is good, I'm most active and most fit) so as far as the 20-25 lb gain goes: Not happy. I am 32, never been pregnant so I'm not battling hormonal changes and baby weight. I typically eat very well and am moderately active. The changes in my body are only visible in my abdomen: I look pregnant and bloated in my mid-section, and breasts are swollen. OK, my boobs look awesome when I jiggle them into my Victoria's Secret Very Sexy Push-up Bra and it takes attention off of my new muffin-top so I'm ok with the big boobs thing. But they do hurt. And yes I've been dealing with depression and mood swings that are really not typical for me but like most Americans I have been juggling with fall out from job loss, debt management, trying to run a household on my own while the value plummets despite all the hard work and money I've put into it, new job is kicking my arse, yadda yadda- the attitude truely could be reflective and a mini mid-life crisis. But it's not uncommon for Mirena users so I definitely wanted to share that experience.
Has anybody found any specific description on what causes this weight shift in the body? I've of course been told it's because of:
1. progesterine
2. and also have read from user comments (not doctor, but user, so it is not necessarily a credible statement) that the mirena tricks your body into thinking it is pregnant so you build up a protective fat barrier around your abdomen.
My questions:
Question 1. Progesterine- if this is the only cause for the weight change, we need to learn how to counter-balance the effects of progesterine in the body to manage it's impact on weight. It appears to me that from the varied comments from users on how people are gaining, maintaining, and one even lost weight since the installation of the Mirena IUD:
- diet exercise appear to have no impact on managing the Mirena weight gain. The people who need diet and exercise still need diet and exercise, the people who have the body type that don't need diet and exercise still don't.
- Before you respond to that- be honest: If you're going to be one of those people who says "but I have always been able to eat, and eat, and eat and never gain anything..." I'm 32 and was an extreme athlete all through high school. I maintained the same weight (from 115-120) from the age of 18-31 without working out anymore, just normal busy body activities like caring for the lawn, dogs, house, walking and always taking the stairs instead of escalator. Not big effort. Now maybe my weight didn't range much, but I can tell ya, I've always been able to detect changes in my "physique"... sometimes- tiny muffin top or cellulite, pudge under the bra-straps. It certainly correlated with how "active" I was. When I was bartending and working construction- I was lean. When I'm working behind a computer all day, I look a little softer around the edges, but I still really looked the same and just felt snug in the same clothes I always wore. Clearly fitness has always had an impact on my physique, although I was blessed enough not to have challenges managing it. Don't respond to the digits on the scale: consider your true physique when determining whether or not you truely don't need diet and exercise to manage your body's structure.
- So I'm looking at the progesterine. I want the medical student answer for what the chemical cause and effect is for progesterine's effects on the body. That's the only way we can learn how to manage the "progesterine causes weight gain" theory. Every hormone has it's opposite; checks and balances. If an increase in one hormone occurs, there's an imbalance with it's counterpart. Can that other hormone be stimulated to balance the two out? If that hormone affects metabolism, where fat is stored in the body, etc, balance is the only thing that is going to enable us to manage the weight issue.
Question 2: "Mirena tricks the body into believing it is pregnant so it packs on the protective layer of fat around the abdomen". Can we find a credible source to confirm this? If it's true, is it strictly due to the progesterine or is there something else we haven't received information on yet that has an impact on the body's response? If there are missing pieces on what contributes to the "false pregnancy" state the body is entering while Mirena is used, obviously those missing pieces are the parts we need to learn 1. how those unknown factors affect the body (particulary interested in the effects of weight control) and 2. how can those factors be counter-balanced to manage weight.
What I am trying to do to manage my weight at this time:
I already avoid fast foods and almost never touch them, maybe hit the drive through 5 times a year. Truely. It makes my stomach sour. I'm not a junk food snacker- I love popcorn, raw veggies, cheese for snacks. Nearly never sweets, I'm a salt and sour kind of gal. Drinking a lot of soda is pretty new to me in the past year. I love foo-foo starbucks drinks and have been getting one everytime I hit the road for work (I travel constantly and average 1000 miles/week on the road.) So, I'm cutting out soda, alcoholic beverages, foo-foo coffee drinks and sugary juices for 1 month and starting to exercise (tuned up the bicycle and have started hitting the trails now that the weather has straightened out.) I'll post updates on my results to let you know if this has had much impact on my physique and/or body weight. Yesterday was day 1.
Ladies, Let me know what you think, I'll gladly share what I learn along the way.

Im so frustrated too! Right after I had my baby, within a few weeks I was back to my original weight of between 130-135. I got the mirena inserted in nov and by jan I weighed 143. It is now Aug and I weight 153. I havent ever had a problem with weight and now I eat better and am more active than I was before I got the Mirena and I have gained over 20 lbs. My hands and feet also swell up so bad that I had to get my wedding rings resized and I dont feel like myself at all. I feel like Im pregnate all over again. I plan to get the Mirena removed as soon as possible.

Wow! I have had my IUD for 4 years. I was so happy with it in the beginning but over this past year and half, I've been not to happy. I've started to have lots of health issues, including joint pain, fatigue, yeast infections and I've gained about 50 pounds over the past 4 years. I'm pretty active and I work out pretty regurly. I've never been a junk food junky and I'm 5'5-5'6 and throughout my teens and early 20's weighed between 115-135. I'm currently 34 with two kids. I had my first son at 26, I weighed 120-125 prior to getting pregnant with him. My doctor encouraged me to gain at least 50 pounds because she felt I was "underweight" for my height, frame and age. So, I did but after having him I maintained a consistent weight of around 145, which I was not bad and I was in around a size 6-8 clothes. Two years later I got pregnant with my second son and got up to 175-180 the biggest I had ever been in my life. I lost 20 pounds and got back down to around 145-150 in 06. However, I got the IUD Mirana in early 2007 and gained 15-20 pounds within that year. I seemed to be able to sustain the 160-165 for the first 2 years of having the Mirana. I continued to work out but just could not loose weight even with phentermine and weight watchers. I just assumed because of my age 32 and because I had 2 kids my body had changed. I accepted being 165 even though I wanted to get back to 145. I missed wearing between size 4-6 and now I was stuck in an 8-10. In early 2008 I started to gain even more weight even with exercise, weight watchers, change of diet and phetermine. I soon lost my job at the end of 08 and had blossomed to a lovely 185. I was now in a size 10-12 the size I wore when I was preggo...I became depressed and blamed it on the job situation, even though when I'm stressed I loose my appetite-yet I was gaining weight bad. I soon got out of my depression in 09 and started working out with a trainer 3 days a week, taking yoga and pilates, running at least 3 miles at 3 times a week, and weight lifting 2-4x a week, I was even keeping a food diary, I've always been good at just drinking water, due to the fact I don't care for soda's. After 6 months of working out vigurously and eating healthy I lost a mere 10 pounds. I was soo confused and wanted to give up but I kept pushing myself eventually getting a prescription for phetermine and lost maybe another 4 pounds in 3 months. was now around 175. However, I could not keep it off and eventually got back to 185. I became depressed. I've always had a pretty flat stomach and small waist but I'm a little hippy no bigger than 40 in the hips prior to Miran. Now, I'm very hippy 44 and I have a muffin top that will not go anywhere! It seems like I keep gaining more weight around my waist-despite the fact all I eat now is salads, baked salmon, water and egg whites for breakfast, along with some fruit and cheese for snacks. I'm also on phetermine again and back to working out vigurously. I've been doing all this for about 3-4 weeks and have lost 0 pounds. I actually had gained and went up to 193, I didn't eat over stress for 2 days back to 189, but never any lower. I'm convinced Mirana is the issue with my health and weight. I'm so fatique and my body aches constantly. The doctors at one time thought I had Lupus. I went through numerous test ect...At this time everything seems to be fine medically speaking with my health, thyroid, ect.., my knees still ache like a 80 year old woman, and I have horrible stomach pains and I CAN NOT DROP these xtra Pounds. I've always lost weight pretty easliy. I will be calling my doctor on Monday to make an appointment to have this device removed. Although, I've enjoyed the freedom of not taking the pill or having a period (yes no period I may spot every 3-6 months) for the past 4 years I don't think it's worth all the other issues I've had to deal with. I can not say 100% that the IUD is causing all my elements, but I do personally believe it's hindering my weight loss. I've finally decided to get this removed. Especially now after finding this site and seeing so many go through similar situations. Oh the best part. I'm now 190 pounds! I'm miserable-taken diet pills, exercising and everything-not loosing weight and my stomach seems to keep getting bigger. It's bigger now than when I was prego with my first son...I think my knee pain is due to all this weight-since I have a small frame and shouldn't be bigger than 150. Oh and acne-yes I too have experienced acne-I've always had nice skin and never had break outs...Now, I'm constantly washing my face and getting facials. I also experience hair loss over the past year occassionally...Again as stated in an earlier post no patches but when I wash my hair and comb through it, I lose more than normal. I will keep you guys updated after I have this thing removed... Good luck to you all...Again, my first two years with IUD was awesome.-no period, no pregancy, no worries.T However, this last 2 have been a NIGHTMARE! It appears to bring about 15-20 pounds per year. At this rate I'm at 189-190? I will be at 209-210 by 2011...Never that! I plan on loosing 50 pounds before I'm 35 not gaining 20 and I will be 35 in exactly 7 months...With that said-Bye bye IUD-Hello periods...") I will take a period to drop this weight. I'm going to continue with my low calorie, fat diet and phetermines over the next 5 months and see what happens...I will be on here to let you know rather you should let it stay or let it go...Stay Tuned!

I have had the IUD for over a year now and I have gained 25 pounds. I was wondering what was happening and if the IUD was causing my weight gain. I am so scared to have it removed because It really is the best form of birth control for me. I have three children and really don't want to have anymore children. I think I am going to have to remove it so I can get back to a healthy weight. :'(

I have had the mirena for 3 years now and feel like I'm 5 months pregnant. The worst symptom aside from the belly weight are vision problems. My eyes are blurry, sensitive to light, and hurt while trying to focus on anything. I've been to two doctors and they couldn't find anything wrong w/ my eyes and I don't even need/wear glasses or contacts. I have been super irritable since I got the IUD but I thought part of it was becoming a stay at home mom at the same time I got it. I called yesterday to make an appt. with my OBGYN so hopefully they call me back today. I'm ready to get rid of this bloated muffin top and get my vision and clear skin back!

I am having the same problem with mirena. I have had it 2x, 1st time i got it removed, i got preg 2 weeks later. now im 9months postpartum, and i am at the heaviest I have ever been. Im depressed, moody, cant eat, cant sleep. Granted I lost my 15 month old son in march of 08. That is when i got it removed, and got pregnant. I had no idea i would get preggp soo fast. I know my symptons can be from depression from the accident, but idk. I have an app on thursday to talk to my ob. hopefully I can switch to paraguard. Its 10 years but its harmone free.

The thing is... the Doctors tell you it doesn't cause weight gain but then again, it's putting "extra" hormones into your body. It can cause massive infections in some and can also cause your "tubes" to become damage which can cause you to NEVER have children again. That's the consequences of having a "foreign" object placed inside of your body. Also I have read many post from women who say sex can be uncomfortable and undesirable, their moods change consistently other use the term "psychotic" at times. I've had the Mirena for about 3 years now and ever since I can't lose weight and I'm somewhat crazed at the smallest of things, sex is a NO WAY! most of the time. I also bled for 6 months after having it placed in. I'm having it removed. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome not to remember to take a pill and not to worry about a period but I seriously can't deal with the whole "can't lose weight" b.s. I have noticed a change in in my mood because I use to be a relaxed chilled type of person now-a-days I scream at random people. I guess it depends on the person. I recommend finding a another form of birth control if you're having issues.
