Thrombocytopenia refers to insufficient presence of platelets in the blood, while the amount of other blood cells remains normal. Idiopatic means without known reason. Platelets, or thrombocytes, are a specific sort of blood cells that are responsible for coagulation process. Without platelets and some other factors of coagulation, bleeding can not be prevented. A blood clot is formed in order to stop bleeding and any further loss of precious blood. Depending on the fact how many thrombocytes are missing from normal values, the severity of expressed disease can vary. "Low platelets", is another term for thrombocytopenia.
