hi there,

I recently had sepoplasty surgery and it will not change the apperance of your nose but the surgeons will straighten the septum so that you will have balanced breathing and proper sinus drainage. Unfortunately the extreme uncomfortable feeling you have for a week or more afterwards if there is packaging or splints placed after surgery is something you have to bear. it ain't pleaseant but all so worth it.

Broke nose at age 18; deviated septum; had septoplasy at age 28. Am now 53 and have chronic sinusitis; while the surgery helped with blocked breathing, it did not help avoid the sinusitis. Septoplasy does not change the outer appearance of the nose; for that one would have to have a rhinoplasty.

I broke my nose in my late teens and just had a septoplasty last week at the age of 44.  Best decision of my life!  It doesn't alter the outer appearance of your nose at all, but it made a life-changing difference to the inside of it!  My quality of life improved 100 fold and I've never been able to breathe as well as I do now.  I had my nasal splints removed today and was desperately afraid of it being painful.  It didn't hurt AT ALL!  Don't be scared - honestly, look forward to it!  It will be the best breath of air you've ever had!

I wouldn't do it , I had it 4 months ago and it didn't help, they stuff you nose with cotton for 7 days' you can't breath,, you get dizzy, my nose now is crooked because they insert cartilage in my nose and I feel exactly the same symptom, home remedies helps better then surgery.

I am asthamatic and having a deviated Septum with enlarged turbinates. Septum is not so deviated but i still thinking for going for opearation as it might give me some relief in asthama. Am i thinking correct. ? Also after the operatoin since my nose will be blocked for a couple of days to might be a week , is giving me nightmares as i dont know how i will survive with my asthama and nose blocked .

I had a septoplasty almost 20 years ago. I was a teenage kid and the doctor pressured me into it. "Either this or stay on the medication." I went ahead with it since he wouldn't leave me alone about it. The week of excruciating pain and profuse bleeding aside, I have to say, now, that it was a huge mistake. There was absolutely no change in my condition. I still get sinus infections sometimes and there has still never been a time that I could breathe through my right nostril. I've learned to live with it which I should have done in the first place. The scars are still tight, dry and uncomfortable. They dry out and bleed sometimes. My outer septum has curved horribly. Luckily it's not noticeable from the outside but the feel of it curving to the left is very uncomfortable. The membranes have been much dryer ever since the surgery, almost as if they were damaged in some way. I have to drip coconut oil into my nose to sort of replicate the mucous that should be there naturally. The surgery has really just left my whole nasal cavity in worse condition than before. So, from my experience, I can't recommend it. Other people may have had it and had better results, so don't go by my experience alone.

Just want to say thanks to everyone taking their time to post about their experiences! I just found out through my PA at Carolina Asthma and Allergy that I have a deviated septum, confirmed by my ENT. I am going for a CT scan tomorrow. I am also going to rule out food or chemical allergies in a few weeks, mostly because a nasal antihistamine is what controls my post nasal drip out of just about everything else one could possibly try. PND is worse around cold air so I think I will do the surgery towards summer since I get sick so easily! I can't imagine getting sick while healing from septoplasty. Yikes. Thanks again guys.

I had my Septoplasty last week and I'm a little worried because the Septum/cartilege seems bent and over to my left nostril, and very loose feeling to gently psh back and forth, whereas the right nostril is much larger and clearer. Is this some kind of surgical trick they do that allows the suptum to gradually move and stay into a new shape, or does it sound like it's gone wrong, clicked out of place maybe ?

Just had mine done yesterday at 11am (septo and turbinate reduction)... I could breathe immediately afterwards! Was a little congested last night and bled a little (needed a nose pad) but today (day after surgery) I am breathing at 90% already and no bleeding or draining ....I am shocked how easy I am recovering and not sure if this is the norm. Best thing I ever did!!!!

I had a septoplasty done along with a tonsillectomy. I'd been having very severe allergies , sinus infections and sore throats I went to the ENT that Friday and she told me my tonsils were horrible , I had a deviated septum , polyps , and my turbinates were enlarged mainly in my left nostril. The surgery in all took 45 to an hour , and I went home the same day. The septoplasty didn't bother me , it was really just the splints that had to stay in for a week , mouth breathing with after a tonsillectomy is not fun at all but when I got them out i had another procedure done to open my actually sinuses which was an in office procedure called ballon sinuplasty. Hurt like hell but after sleeping for an hour after it was like nothing ever happened. I can now breathe a lot better , still using sinus rinse three weeks later because the stuff that collects inside my nose has not been pretty . I do get some swelling in my right nostril though lately . Will address it at my 1 month appointment next Tuesday

I had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction a week ago yesterday. My septum was to the right blocking that nostril. I would have a terrible time sleeping and when I had allergies- forget it! My nose would immediately stuff up when I laid down. I would snore horribly at night to where my husband would wake me up multiple times. I would even wake myself up. We both never got any sleep. I had tried everything - allergy medications, nasal sprays, elevating my head at night, Neti-pot to irrigate my sinuses, humidifiers, even kicking my dogs off the bed because I thought maybe they were making it worse (and they're my babies so it's a big deal haha). Nothing worked, nothing. My dad and mother in law both told me they had the same issues and had septoplasties done and they were so happy with the results. So I decided to tell my ENT Doctor everything I've tried and that I just want it fixed- I. Was. Done! The surgery itself wasn't painful, I mean sure my nose was sore but it wasn't unbearable. The most annoying part were the plastic splints they put in your nose. They are huge, uncomfortable and had to stay in for a week! They're supposed to help healing of the septum tissue and reduce scarring. I suppose they're better than the "packing" they used to do because you couldn't breathe through those. You can't blow your nose or sniff forcefully for a week either which is pretty miserable as well. You will have lots of drainage so keep lots of Kleenex around, preferably the ones with lotion because I wiped mine raw. Getting the splints removed is fun as well- the worse part is the removal of the suture that is IN YOUR SEPTUM and is the weirdest most unecessary feeling ever, but the splints itself were a huge relief. It was a longer recovery than I had expected and I spent a lot of it nauseous, so I would recommend asking for some medication for that beforehand. Anesthesia and surgery is a lot on your body so make sure you take time off work to fully recover and take it easy. You can't do strenuous activity for 2 weeks and I'd recommend at least a week off work. In the end it was totally worth it. I lay down and my nose no longer stuffs up. I can breathe so easy and can smell more than I ever did before. I had no idea this was normal. If it's not something you can fix with medication I would definitely recommend surgery because disrupted sleep is very unhealthy. Personally I am very happy with the results and would do it again if I had to.

I just had my deviated septum corrected and a bunch of nasal polyps removed 5 days ago. Tomorrow will be my first day back to work. The first night was tough trying to sleep and I was pretty tired and first couple of days. I had the packing taken out the day after my surgery and it got suctioned yesterday which felt so great right away after not being able to breathe out of my nose for years. I'm going again this coming Monday to get it suctioned again. In between then I'm pretty stuffy and congested. I'm on antibiotics until Friday and nasal saline for the next 4-6 weeks. I was so nervous before the procedure and it hasn't even been a week yet since my surgery and I am so glad I got it done!
