This is the first time that I experienced excruciating pain during a pap smear. The procedure brought me to tears and yelling profanities. It was like a stabbing knife when the spectrum was inserted and opening up the vagina. I'm sorry to hear that you experienced significant pain during your recent pap smear. While it is normal to feel some discomfort during the procedure, severe pain is not typical and should be addressed by your doctor.
There are various reasons why you may have experienced pain during the pap smear, such as vaginal dryness, vaginal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, or endometriosis. Additionally, previous trauma or sexual abuse can also make the procedure more challenging.
The doctor may suggest using a smaller speculum, applying a lubricant, or prescribing a medication to help relax your pelvic muscles. They may also refer you to a specialist, such as a gynecologist or a pelvic pain specialist, for further evaluation and treatment.
How are you now?
