Hello fellow travellers,

I'm 43 days off of this nasty, but useful medication. A brief history... I was prescribed Subs 5 years ago upon entering a rehab to detox from methadone, which had been prescribed for pain following 2 back surgeries. (I have a substantial history of illegal and rx abuse, but was only using pot the last couple of years minus 43 days). I started at 24mgs. a day but was finally able to get down to 1. mg every other day about a year ago. Any less than that threw me in withdrawal's. I'm not sure if that's typical, possibly a psychological component? I finally decided to take the plunge after getting involved with Narcotics Anonymous, whose support truly helps when detoxing. The first 2 weeks were pure h*ll, with imsomnia, muscle cramping, lack of appetite, severe anxiety - basically all of the symptoms associated with any opiate w/d. I took suggestions and kept well hydrated, drank non-caff herbal teas, took brisk walks. I was wired and tired at the same time, (NA's love to rhyme:), but slowly the symptoms began to fade. I am now able to sleep 4-5 hours, eat well, don't have night sweats anymore, and I can focus on my surroundings once more. My only real problem is a resting pulse rate of 100+ but I'm not sure if it's due to Subs or just finally being off of everything for the 1st time since I was 11-12, (I'm 49 now). I do take SSRI anti-depressants, but hope to never mess with Central Nervous System depressants, like benzodiazepam's, again. My Dr. wanted me to go inpatient to detox, but I chose not to. If you can do a medical detox, go for it!
All I can say is that it's worth the agony to not be obssessed with a drug or worried about going into w/d's anymore. I feel alive and I've surrounded myself with people of like mind and history. Keep the Faith!
