Hello,

Unlike last year when I used Claritin D for my allergy, this year I thought to save up some  money and get a prescription medication since it seems like my allergy came back even stronger this year, and my physician gave me a prescription for Clarinex.

I’ve already noticed Clarinex makes me far less drowsy and sleepy than Claritin D did which is great, and it seems to be as effective as the OTC medication was, but since my insurance will run out this month, I was wondering will it be a problem if I continue taking Claritin D if my allergies don’t stop in the meantime?

Hi Zach, I've been suffering from seasonal allergies for years, with each May-July spent with my nose running with no signs of stopping and when I compare all allergy medications I've tried, I'm having most relief from Allegra. Unlike both Clarinex and Claritin it doesn't make you drowsy at all so I'm able to work normally. Of course, it's a much cheaper when you can get it on a prescription, so maybe it might be worth discussing this with your doctor before your insurance runs out.

Hello Zach,
both Clarinex and Claritin contain chemically very similar substance, and in higher dosages they both can cause drowsiness. However, Claritin D also contains pseudo ephedrine that's added mainly to deal with nasal congestion better, but it also adds more to the sleepiness and drowsiness.
So, if you have to buy over-the counter Claritin next month just ask for the one without pseudo ephedrine and you'll get a similar effect to the one of Clarinex.

Hi,

thanks for replying! So that's why Claritin D was making me so sleepy - pseudoephedrine... I never looked too much into ingredients list, but if I did i'd definitely buy the one without it. Like I said, so far, Clarinex has been working OK and it doesn't make me sleepy at all, even though I've heard it can start doing that in higher dosages.

I guess I'll use my Clarinex this month, and based on last few years since i've started having problems with allergies, they should stop about the same time I use all of the Clarinex I have.
