Hi, I have been feeling severe pain in my back. When I went to see my doctor she referred me to a specialist who ordered an ultrasound. The doctor spoted some kind of kidney mass. He said that there are many causes for this kidney mass and that he will need to perform some additional tests. I am very concerned with this development. I was wondering if you know what conditions can cause the formation of kidney mass, because the doctor seemed to be very concerned.

Hi, I can understand that you are worried about your condition. When my doctor told me that I have a strange cell mass on my kidney I was shocked. The first thing that came to my mind as the reason for the formation of kidney mass is kidney cancer. My doctor also told me that that is one of the options, but that he needs to do a biopsy to make a conclusive diagnosis. To tell you the truth I believe that your doctor should have talked to you about all the possible causes as well. One of the things that confused me the most is that I didn’t have any symptoms, except for the pain. My urologist told me that in most of the cases the kidney cancer shows no symptoms in the early phases of the condition, and that if I had cancer it would be a good thing that we caught it so early. The days until my biopsy are the worst days of my life. I didn't sleep or eat, all I did was lie in bed and cry. I thought that my life was over. Finally the biopsy was done and the doctor told me that I have a cyst and not cancer. A few days later I had a surgery and the doctor removed the cyst. I hope that you will be as lucky as I was with my kidney mass.

Hi Clo
I'm glad it worked out for you, fingers crossed its the same for me. I'm waiting for my CT scan so I'm in that same place of not knowing that you were.
My symptoms were that I was perfectly healthy until 2 months ago, and then started waking up in the night with backache. Just sitting up for 5 minutes made it go away, and then I could sleep again. It was worse if I'd eaten a very full meal. During the day I felt no symptoms at all. Then a month ago I was aware of the discomfort during the day, went to a chiropractor first as I thought it was joints/muscles., and then to the doctor. An ultrasound has revealed a large mass on my left kidney (12cm diameter) - I guess it must have been there a long time, and as I otherwise feel healthy I'm telling myself that its just the size that's causing me grief and when its removed I'll be better - but the CT and biopsy can't come soon enough for me now!
