I had a leep done when I was 16, I am 24 now. The only bad thing about the leep is that it DOES leave scar tissue on your cervix. Depending on how much scar tissue this can also cause discomfort during sex, at least it does for me. When I had my leep done I had severe dysplysia and the doctor told me that if I would of waited 6 months it would of turned into cancer. I know some people on here is saying no but it is your LIFE that is in the balance of this decision. Though I had problems conceiving there is stuff out there to help you. I had to take clomid to get pregnant. The fertility doctor didn't say anything to me at all about my cervix but said I didn't ovulate cause I had irregular periods. I finally got pregnant with my son in 07'. Another bad thing about the LEEP is that since you have scar tissue it effects your dilation during labor. I was in labor with my son for 27 hours and they had to come in there every 2 hours and basically tear my cervix cause the scar tissue would get tight and stop dilating, but in the end I ended up getting a c section. Though it was rough I wouldn't change one thing about it. I have a healthy 2 year old boy and he was worth all of it.

I just had the leep on the 18th of My 2010. The procedure itself (while invasive as the stirrup sessions at the doctor usually are) was not that bad. it actually took longer for them to set up everything than it did to do it. My doctor did warn me of LESS THAN 1 % chance that the cervix will close up and that you may have to get it reopened later. Also if the doctor errors and cuts too much off you will not be able to carry a baby for the full term... meaning premature pregnancy or no children. I can't "insert" anything for a month (i.e. intercourse, tampons) and have also had good and bad days on cramping (but think period cramps not... abdominal, or anywhere else) ... I go back on the 15th of June to get results and was told that there would be "coffee ground" like discharge until then (that stage hasn't started yet. OH also there is a little prick when they put the anestesia in that I had a not so fun reaction too. it is supposed to be local and then you taste a "metallic" taste in your mouth...well it went straight to my head and I got super dizzy and felt like I was going to pass out... we waited it out and they put a cold rag on my head and it ended up being okay, but that was scary. Also just a warning they stick a big old bandaid like metal strip on your thigh to ground you since they are using electrical current. The reason I am on here is because I was wondering if exhaustion was a side effect. maybe from the body healing..since the procedure i have been so physically tired that even minor tasks are major chores...did anyone else have this problem?

Wow, ya'll are scaring the sh*t out of me. I'm having one done on July 9th and I have read absolutely nothing comforting on this website.
Can someone give me some sort of positivity here?

I just had the LEEP done this afternoon and felt absolutely no pain nor discomfort. When I woke up from the "twilight" anesthesia, I felt mild cramping, but that went away quickly. I've been bleeding lightly throughout the afternoon/evening, but nothing major. I couldn't have asked for a better experience thus far; I hope the trend continues as I heal!

I was the post right before yours. Everything is back to normal.... My period was on time and normal. Discharge gone in record time. I was at a level II and III for cancer cells, but the biopsy showed i am down to a I - II stage. I now go back for Paps every six months then if thats one is okay I go back to annual. It was bad post procedure. I hope yours goes well. I was scared too after reading this site.

In May I had a bad pap come back & then I had to have a colposcopy & a biopsy of my cervix & uterus. The scraping of the uterus was insanely painful. Results came back severe so I had to have the LEEP procedure done Tuesday (almost a week ago). The LEEP was nothing compared to the biopsy. I suggest if your super nervous (which I was SO nervous & scared since the biopsy was so traumatic) take a friend with you or family member - I was allowed to bring someone in the room with me. I also suggest going to your family doctor before LEEP & get them to write you a prescription for some anti-anxiety pills. Having my friend there & taking the pills an hr before the procedure totally helped. There is no need to go through the worry & stress of having this done.

I had a LEEP done after a colopscopy revealed I had moderate dysplasia about two months ago.

To be honest, my nurse practitioner at the time said I had to have a LEEP and to schedule it with a regular gyno. She told me my cells could be precancerous and this was basically a cure. So, I did it. I didn't realize it was as big of a deal as it is until I was about to have it done and discussed it with the gyno.

I think it is a shame that some doctors are not discussing the particulars of this procedure with their patients. And I am even more alarmed at how many of you were not informed of the common side effects before being sent home.

What I've experienced and what my gyno said to expect and do:
- brownish discharge and some spotting for two weeks.
- cramping for a week.
- no tampons for three weeks.
- no heavy lifting or exercise for a month.
- no intercourse for a month.

I've switch to the gyno who did my procedure because she was wonderful during the procedure. They will put a pad on your thigh to "ground you" because of the current. They insert the speculum, which is obviously uncomfortable. She put local anesthetic on, which I felt but it was not a big deal. The actual procedure was quick. I'd say it was more uncomfortable than painful -- at least no worse than the colopscopy.

My gyno did discuss the possibility of infertility. She said the LEEP can thin your cervix in a way that can make it difficult to carry a baby full term. She said to be sure to bring this up to my doctor when I get pregnant, so we can monitor the situation. I think the amount of skin they need to take and where exactly it is taken from can have an affect on this. Mine was relatively small, so she said I really should be OK.

Each woman's situation is different and they really should discuss it with a physician they feel comfortable with. When the gyno saw how nervous I was before the procedure, she stopped everything, sat with me and talked about it. She was more than willing to answer my questions before and after. I called her a week later to check on one of my side effects (because honestly I was so nervous during the procedure I couldn't remember everything she told me) and she was more than willing to discuss it with me over the phone. If your doctor won't take the time to answer your questions and be sensitive to your situation, you might be better off going elsewhere. I feel for the woman who had bad experiences, but I think each situation is really very different and should be treated as such.

I came on here because I've noticed some other changes and I am wondering if they are related to the procedure. I plan to speak with my gyno if they persist during my next check up. I've noticed I have severe bloating and more painful cramping than I did before. My period is regular, but I am on the pill. I've also noticed some pain/discomfort during intercourse. At first I attributed it to our month break, but now I'm not so sure.

Good luck to all you ladies.

I am getting ready to have a LEEP done soon. One of the dr's at my OB/Gyn did 2 separate biopsies and said I have moderate dysplasia. She recommended that I have a LEEP. I went in for a consult with one of the other Dr's in the practice that had done a previous unrelated surgery on me. He became annoyed with me because I do not want to have this done at their office. He compared it to having your teeth cleaned at the hospital and laid a guilt trip on me about doing it the "hard" way (in the hospital) vs the "easy" way (in their office). I told him that based on how I've reacted to other treatments and procedures in the past and knowing my body, that I preferred to do it at the hospital. I told him I was nervous and afraid--that I am a single mom with no one to help me. I told him that he just didn't understand because he's a man and had never had something like this done. Well, he got upset with me and said he had "done" thousands of these and he was insulted that I would even say that. I explained that I didn't mean it as an insult. I was pretty upset after leaving their office and started to worry that he would be the one doing the procedure. That makes me very nervous after how he talked to me trying to make me feel guilty about making the best choice for me. I called their office and requested that the dr. who did the biopsy do the LEEP. I'm hoping the other dr. doesn't find out that I did that. I think it's really important to make sure you have an understanding dr. since most of us are already scared and nervous about having this done. I'm hoping when it's all done, I will be posting that I had a good experience with the LEEP and the healing also.

I had the LEEP done in mid 2008. I had it done in the hospital as an outpatient procedure. I went under anesthesia so it was quick and painless. I did cramp for a few days afterward, but the doctor gave me a prescription for the pain/cramping. I found out I was pregnant in September of 2008 and I delivered a beautiful, healthy baby girl in May of 2009. She is now 15 months old and doing just fine! Just do what your doctor recommends and make sure you have your follow up paps. All of mine have been clear since the LEEP. I'm going for another on the 21st of this month. So yes, not everyone has a horror story. In fact, I think my LEEP procedure actually HELPED me conceive. :)

I had my leep done 9 days ago today. I'm 22 now and have had an ongoing issue for 2 years. Within 6 months my cells upgraded 2 stages so the Doc's decided they couldn't wait to remove them. So 9 days ago I had the procedure done.
The set-up took the most time. Although I have to admit the needle hurt, however I couldn't feel a thing during the procedure. They had to remove two seperate parts one at the top and one at the bottom which lead to them connecting the two into one big removal.
I have bad cramps for approx. 4 days and have started to get really bad discharge. I'm now at the stage of feeling like I'm peeing my pants with the amount of discharge coming out from time to time when I stand up. My panty liners are not thick enough! I have also started getting the black and brown spots coming out also. I have to admit I was nervous and wasn't sure this was normal- which lead me here.
How long will this last?

I am a 30 years old and had the procedure about three weeks ago and have had no problems. The only side effects I've had would be light bleeding for a few weeks. I went for my two week check up and my OB/GYN said that everything is healing great.

Excuse me, did you undergo a LEEP procedure?

I have. My mother is a nurse, Ispent a lort of time in the hospital she works. my gynecologist has been my doctor for 10 years and she is really sweet. However she told me to get a Leep after haing bad results on the smear.

I wasn't fully told the positive and negative effects of this procedure.

After one year and a half I'm still having a pap every 3 months (at the beggining I had one every month "just in case").

I'm 22 years old. My firts diagnostic was dysplasia CIn II with CIN III. My family and I were worried but confident on the doctor's recommendations. Unaware of the real consequences and how this would affect my future y had my Leep on August 2009.

Afterwards they said the results weren't promising and I had to get preagnant within 6 months and the would take my uterus after the baby had been born.

After a few months I notified my doctor I wasn't going to get preagnant at such youn age and I wasn't gonig to allow them to cut me open.

I've spent all this time between PAPs, colposcopies, biopsies, blood tests.... Every result means another test. This doesn't seem to end..

Now because of so much testint I've had infections, I've been kept from work for weeks. I've taken antibiotics, I can't use contraconception, online condoms.

And I have chronic pains, that go from moderate to severe.

I can't ever stop thinking about HPV, as I'm constantly screened and the screening has led to low quality of life.

If I had been assessed properly, I would have never done this. It didn't end with the Leep, it continues and now I'm suffering from side effects.

Even now, I had to do reasearch and talk to my doctor for her to aknowledge my disconfort is due to the procedure.

I had it done in the best Hospital of the country, with the best doctor, he is a professor.

HE is a man. So when he found that IT was bigger than he thought and even though I was awake and talking to him during the procedure; he never asked if he could cut more. so I was told by the follow up doctor and my doctor "Mmm.. It's a wide Leep".

Still I don't know what this really means. Stilll I have to have byopsis and colposcopies without anesthesia.

still in this world there's Gynecologic violence.

I think it's important to BE AWARE of cons and pros. So you can make an informed decition.

-IT'S YOUR RIGHT-

I wouldn't do it again. Not until I had resorted to all posible treatments.

I had my LEEP done 4 years ago and ever since I have spotted/bled. It always happens after intercourse or exercise, a brown blood. My gyno keeps setting me up for procedures and I went on depro. to stop cycles but it isn't helping. Just had my yearly pap done and she finally said it is probably scar tissue from the LEEP procedure. Four years later! I did get a shock during the procedure and wondered if that created scar tissue somewhere it should not have ( like the doctor slipped up during the LEEP- I almost jumped off the table!)Thankfully my husband was there. Any advice on what to do from here? I have not been able to get a hold of my gyno. being the holidays and all.

I had the LEEP procedure done this year and it was not bad at all! I was pretty upset prior to that and after it was all said and done, I couldn't believe I made such a big deal out of it in my head. All you feel is a quick prick then you are numb. They ground you and use a rod that carries an electric current through it to burn thin layers of your cervix away to eliminate all of the cells. It took maybe 5-10 minutes max and I literally walked out of there by myself and went to work right after. I had barely any cramping but did spot for about 6 weeks on and off, especially after intercourse around the 5th and 6th weeks...but after the 6th week I was healed. I was also told that I shouldn't have problems carrying a child full term; however, it depends on how deep they had to go upon removal of the tissue. That is something only your doctor can tell you. My periods are more irregular ever since and I spot in between them sometimes but I will take that over potentially losing my life any day! Don't be scared if you need this done! There is nothing to freak out about!
