I have just been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, even though I had mood swings for a long time now, and nobody was able to give me a diagnose. Anyway, I was prescribed Lithium, tablets450mg, and I would like to know how lithium works.

I have been using Lithium for 3 years now. Lithium interferes at several places inside cells and on the cell surface with other positively charged atoms such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium which are important in many cellular functions. It interferes with the synthesis and reuptake of chemical messengers by which nerves communicate with each other. Lithium also affects the concentrations of tryptophan and serotonin in the brain. Lithium's effects usually begin within one week of starting treatment, and the full effect is seen by 2 to 3 weeks.
