Hello! I am newly diagnosed and need some insights and experiences from people who have had Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism for a while. Are you taking any lithium therapies? What are your opinions about this? Are there side effects that I need to be aware of in advance? Thanks! for taking the time to reply!

Hi, as with everyone, your symptoms will depend on the specific level of deterioration of thyroid gland. It is scary enough to find out that you have autoimmune disease, and yes, everybody assures you that it is completely manageable, but after the initial stress, it gets really frustrating to wait for hormone replacement medication to start to work effectively because it takes months for them to start to work effectively, but they eventually do. How are you feeling now? And why do you think you need the Lithium? I’m positively sure that it is highly unlikely that any physician familiar with your medical history would prescribe you Lithium. Even the manically-depressed people with normal thyroid function have to perform regular checks of TSH levels because it is definitely proven that Lithium causes hypothyroidism. Hope you will consult someone with more expertise about Lithium, and good luck with therapy!

Lithium carbonate, the form used for psychiatric disorders, seems to be the problem. Other forms, such as derived from lithium sulfate monohydrate as used in some supplements at less than 2mg, do not appear to cause Hashimoto's.
