My friend had some problems with her thyroid gland. After some more test, she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It means that the gland produces less hormones than necessary. It seems that this is caused by autoimmune process. Can someone explain me this little more? It will mean a lot to me.

Hi, there. Autoimmune process on thyroid gland can give hypo- or hyperthyroidism. Autoimmune hypothyroidism has two forms. The first one is chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimoto thyroiditis. The other one is autoimmune atrophic thyroiditis or primary myxedema. Since your friend has a lack of hormone, if necessary, he needs thyroid supplements. He will need some lifestyle changes. I am not sure about the steroids since we are talking about autoimmune disease. You should consult an expert for more info. Good luck!
