hello i recevie my blood test results back today and was told my a t l was borderline the doctor said it was nothing to worry about and to repeat the test in a month i do not drink much alchoal atall and i am very worried why the test has come back borderline. all my other tests were fine i am not annemic my b12 was fine and my liver function was fine too. could you tell me what atl is exactly i no it is the liver and why it could be borderline many thanks

I have to agree with your doctor. Borderline elevated ALT liver test result, with all these important thing such as liver function, B12 and blood tests being completely fine, is not sign of anything in particular: there is no liver damage, your body is functioning properly and your doc did the best thing he could and it is a retest in a month.

But, ALT value is a measure that shows if there is any actual damage to the liver cells, usually the damage that would be caused by excessive drinking for a week before test. But, since liver is the organ that processes all the medications we take, there is also the possibility that the medications cause this type of damage.

And higher ALT doesn’t just appear because of the use of some “heavy” drugs. Even the acetaminophen, Tylenol and many of the OTC medications can cause just the value you got, borderline high ALT.
