Hello. I’m 35 now and I've suffered from constipation almost all my life. You can't imagine how painful and unpleasant this condition really is.
Sometimes, condition is that bad that I end up in emergency room with terrible pains in lower abdomen and also abdomen swelling.
Then I get in emergency room some cocktail and I was ok for about a week and then everything again.
I started to use laxatives few months ago and they relieved my symptoms but I heard they can cause damage to my intestine wall.
Is this true?
I also heard about some bulk fiber called Citricul which can help a little and relieve my digestive problems and constipation!
Can anybody help me?

I think I can help because I experienced almost same problems you have. This is a very spread disease even with younger people and most common digestive problem, so don’t think you’re alone in this.
First, before any therapy, I strongly suggest you to go to your gastrologist and perform some tests like gastroscopy, colonoscopy and rectoscopy.
Whit this testing you will know for sure you don’t have any organic disorder and than you can commit your self to your constipation problems.
I did these tests and they showed nothing was wrong with me.
So they recommended me to use some bulk fiber like Citricul and milk of Magnesa combined and that really helped me.
I'm taking a tablespoon of fiber every morning. I started having bowel movements 2x a day on the first week and one a day ‘till now. So, there is solution to your problems.

Have you ever been tested for hirschsprung's disease? This is a condition that is usually caught within the first few years of life, but can go undiagnosed into adulthood. I would only mention this to your doctor if this is a problem you have been having since birth, since it is a congential issue. About 3% of the population are diagnosed as adults. It doesn't sound like very many, but it it possible.
The most common complaints in adults is constipation. Try to eat more fibrous foods. Maybe taking mirilax twice daily can help you. It is over the counter now and it works pretty well. What I would suggest is starting out with 2 cups full of mirilax twice daily for 7 days and then after the 7 days is up just take one cup full daily. You can also take milk of magnesia in between there. Both are saline laxitives and are safe to use on a regular basis.
If you have a family history of polyps or other GI issues, maybe you should talk to your doctor about getting a colonoscopy. There could be issues going on inside that need to be addressed. You could also probably benefit from a CT scan with contrast. However, they probably do these every time you end up in the er. Just stay on top of your symptoms. Maybe keep a diary of how you feel and the things you take and eat daily. That will help your doctor more when you see him/her. Constipation is not really something that you can get rid of for a week and then not take anything. You have to continuously take care of yourself with fiber, drinking enough water, exercise, and if necessary laxitives or fiber supplements (metamucil, etc.).
I am a RN who sees patients with this problem daily. Just don't get discouraged. You will find something that works for you. :-D
