Hello, folks. My wife and I are considering of spreading our family. However, there is a problem. My wife suffers from crohn’s disease and I would like to know if there is a possibility of taking some medications that will manage this disease during pregnancy. For those who do not know, this is a form of inflammatory bowel disease. I hope someone could answer me this. I know that in the past, women with this disease were advised not to get pregnant, but I hope this has changed.

Hi, there. As you probably know, it is better to avoid all the medications during pregnancy. You never know. However, you must see what is better for your wife’s health. Sometimes you cannot neglect medications. There are some medications that are proven to be safe during pregnancy. Some of them are used for maintain the disease. Others are used for relapses. Sulfasalazine is one of the safer ones. You can also try with Asacole and prednisone. However, this is something that you shouldn’t be deciding on your own. Consult both gastroenterologist and obstetrician about this matter. I hope everything will be all right.
