can pregnant women use metronidazole even when prescribed by a doctor?

Loading...

Metronidazole is classified by the FDA a class B drug. This means that no studies have been done on humans regarding birth defects and other negative effects on the mother and the baby.
Like any other drug, Metronidazole as well, is not recommended to be used in the first trimester. However, since many bacterial and other infections could be posing a huge risk to the baby’s well being, Metronidazole may be prescribed in such situations. This would mean that the benefits of the drug outweigh the possible risks.
Infections may cause preterm labor, baby’s low weight, or premature rupturing of the membrane and therefore should be treated as soon as possible.
So, if your doctor felt that you and your baby would benefit from the Metronidazole, then you should take it and be monitored.
