Scientists have modified a type of herpes virus to selectively replicate in cancer cells, killing them in the process. This virus type, named NV1020, showed promise in a preliminary study in destroying cancer cell without damaging normal cells and hurting the rest of the body.
A study case was presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology conference in Lugano, Switzerland.
As it is usually the case, the virus was first tested in animals where it proved effective against colorectal and liver cancer cells. For the time being, the virus is being tested in humans at seven leading U.S. cancer centers. The researchers are hoping to find a treatment to fight cancer that won’t be causing side effects to the rest of the body.
In a clinical trial done on a human, the patient had cancer that had spread to 10 different places around the liver and four in the lungs. He did not respond to the chemotherapy alone. He was given the virus treatment in four weekly infusions directly into blood stream along with two cycles of approved chemotherapy. Six months following the treatment, liver masses had nearly disappeared.
The researchers were really impressed about the results of the virus treatment and are hoping to develop a treatment that will help get rid one of the biggest killers in the world-cancer.
