I am a 14 year old boy and lately I have been having problems. At night when I try to fall asleep my heart feels like it skips a beat or something. The feeling is so bizarre. Its like when youre on a rollercoaster and your stomach jumps. It only happens when I close my eyes to sleep. Then today my heart began to have a tickling sensation. Sometimes it hurts out of nowhere and it scares me. I went to the doc yesterday and said I have a sinus infection but am I dying? Does anyone know what this is? Please help!

I have had this since I was your age and although it freaked me out big time, I am 43 now so they haven't killed me and I still get them. They are so so common. It is aggravated by caffeine, stress, lack of sleep, not eating for a few hours, smoking, drinking, excitement. Exercise actually allieviates it, although you may think otherwise. It is scary when it happens, especially at first. If you lie still and just let it happen you will probably drop off. My two sisters also get it, and several other people I know. So don't worry. You will be fine.

Thanks for your reply. This made me feel much Better. Did a doc ever tell you what the actual sensation is called?

The doc said they are just missed heart beats. They dont actually miss a beat. They are just spaced irregularly. I got an ECG done where the doc reads your heart and i could see it on the printed out graph. It reassured me. Its totally normal.
