Hi. My sister is on long-term video EEG monitoring for epilepsy. Doctor said that is the way to find out whether she has epilepsy. Is that true? I am worried and I think she has a brain tumor or something.

Hi. Yeah. I suffer from epilepsy. The only way to be sure if a person has epilepsy, is long term video EEG monitoring. However, this is very expensive and inconvenient. If she has epilepsy she should have recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Some other tests may be useful in epilepsy diagnosis, such as EEG, SPECT, magnetoencephalography, brain MRI and PET. But, the gold standard for diagnosis is long term EEG monitoring. People with epilepsy may have perfectly normal EEG results between seizures. Also, epileptic and non-epileptic seizures are very similar.
